The African spurred tortoise is the largest land tortoise, except for the Galapagos and Aldabra giant tortoises.
The spurred tortoise is mostly active during the cooler dusk and dawn, when it searches for succulent plants that supply the bulk of its food and also most of the water that the tortoise requires.
Although it seems that in the Sahel the spurred tortoise will be far from any danger, during their life time the spurred tortoises will battle not only the heat but also the desertification that is caused by over-grazing of domestic animals.

Introduction: Commonly known as the African spurred, furrowed, or Sulcata tortoise, Geochelone sulcata originates in the Sahel region of Africa, along the southern edge of the Sahara Desert.
This tortoise is active all year although it may go through periods of winter cooling and summer estivation (summer hibernation when an animal sleeps to get away from heat, no water, or the food source disappears).
Outdoor tortoises can be given access to a shallow pool or dish of water (keep it clean), or an occasional "rain" from the hose when the weather is warm.

This big African Spurred Tortoise, named Frodo, has a large area of Bermuda and St. Augustine grasses on which to dine.
His favorite treat is cantaloupe for which he always lets out a loud "chaaaaa" sound whenever it is set in front of him.
