The sable antelope (Hippotragus niger) is a large African antelope with long, saber-like horns and in the male a fl coat.

Thrushes are small to medium-sized songbirds that have ten primaries and a turdine 'thumb' on the syrinx.
These large thrushes sing lovely songs; they hop on lawns listening for earthworms and pull them from the soft earth; and their nests can often be easily found.
The Varied Thrush of western North America breeds in dark woods of the northwest and is so shy that it's prolonged note on a minor scale is often the only evidence it is around.

The purpose of this trip was to see as many of the Albertine Rift endemics as possible, and also East African species missed on a previous 700-species trip to Kenya that had included Kakamega.
The main dip was African Piculet which is usually seen, but there were several other possibilities such as Lowland Akalat, Red-bellied and Blue-billed Malimbes, and one half-day did not do it justice.
African Crake was seen running between bushes and the Skimmers were at the mouth of the channel on the beach with Grey-headed Gulls and pelicans.

In addition to the birds, large numbers of huge Nile Crocodiles; Hippopotamus; African Buffalo; Vervet Monkey and Olive Baboon are often seen at very close range, and herds of African Elephants sometimes bath en masse in the shallows.
African Stonechat; Streaky and Thick-billed seedeaters; African Citril and Cape Canary may also be found here.
A late afternoon drive may produce a variety of birds and mammals such as Leopard, and we hope to see African Scops-Owl, which is a resident in the camp itself.

Birds: Sokoke is typical for African lowland forests in that it is dead throughout most of the day.
I have never been in African montane forest before, and I was amazed by the beauty of the Podocarpus forest and the Hagenia and Moorland zone.
Needless to say that I was a little ill-humored by the end of the boat trip, realizing that - all in all - I had paid this guy my last 100 Euros, leaving me almost stranded, and he didn't even present half of what he'd promised.

The abandoned 15th century Arabic city of Gede is surrounded and over-grown by indigenous forest different to that of Arabuko-Sokoke Forest as it is growing on ancient coral unlike the sands of the main forest.
Sabaki is legendary among east African birders for the number of rarities that turn up there, such as frigatebirds, boobies, skuas, vagrant waders such as Pacific Golden Plover, and terns.

There is still much debate over the classification of the Olive Thrushes with some authorities considering the Taita Thrush and the Northern Olive Thrush as 2 races of the same species.
This is a distinctive bird which forages on open ground as well as among leaf litter on woodland and forest floors.
The only similar species is the African Thrush whose range it overlaps (generally at around 2000m).

And of course we managed a visit to the mouth of the mighty Blue Nile as well as some productive birding in the hotel grounds were we were entertained by Double-toothed Barbet, Eurasian Wryneck, Copper Sunbirds, Yellow White-eyes, Eastern Grey Plantain Eaters and some roosting Walhberg’s Fruit Bats.
The views of Abyssinian Ground Thrush at Dinsho were about as good as they get and we also saw a fine bunch of Mountain Nyala there.
The Wondo woodland was alive with colourful images from the ever-so obliging Pygmy Kingfisher to the hordes of White-cheeked Turacos and Abyssinian Black-headed Orioles, Narina’s Trogon and a dazzling display of butterflies.

In the hilly part of the reserve we had excellent views of Cape Rock Thrush, followed shortly afterwards by a number of Sentinel Rock Thrush, African Stonechat and Mountain Wheatear.
The drive to the park was somewhat delayed by the number of birds we saw outside the reserve.
A pair of Black Crake appear to dance among the branches of a large dead tree lying in the water.

Whilst watching Black Crake, African Jacana and Greater Painted-snipe, Steve had a brief view of a rail and after a few minutes we were all able to enjoy superb views of this African equivalent of our Water Rail.
Moving on to a café by the lakeshore, African Openbill, Long-tailed Cormorant, Common Sandpiper and Pied Kingfisher sat in a little group on a small rock in the lake, whilst Black-billed Barbet was found in the adjacent bushes.
At the first pond a single African Darter was seen, but it was in the nearby scrub and woodland that the action started.

In the grounds we found Reichenbach’s Sunbird, African Pygmy and Woodland Kingfishers, Common Wattle-eye, Grey-backed Cameroptera, African Thrush, Klaas’s Cuckoo, African Palm and Little Swifts, Blue-spotted Wood Dove, and Black-and-white Mannikin.
There we were able to hire a couple of local boatmen and their pirogue (small paddled canoe) for 10,000 cfa (Central African Francs).
We went out nightbirding and taped in a White-faced Owl, but it was hidden in some leaves and the only look we got of it was as it flew out of the back of the tree.

 Birdlife and specie types
To a large extent Zambia’s avifauna is that of the Central African Plateau.
Among birds associated with these are the African Mourning Dove, Acacia Pied Barbet, the migrant Tit Babbler, Burnt-necked Eremomela, Crimson-breasted Shrike, Cape Glossy Starling, Burchell’s Starling, Scaly-feathered Finch, Black-faced Waxbill, Shaft-tailed Widow and in sub-montane areas, Brown Parisoma.
This rich habitat is more widespread at plateau levels than in low lying country between lakes Mweru and Tanganyika and it does not occur in the northern Luangwa Valley.

The thick riverine bush lining the edge of the camp area supports Swallowtailed Bee-eater, Ashy Tit, Redeyed Bulbul, Namaqua Warbler, Brubru, and the strikingly dark Northern Cape race of Karoo Thrush.
Hamerkop, African Fish Eagle and Giant Kingfisher breed along the river.

African Black Duck occur on the stream, South African Shelduck are occasionally seen overflying and Spur-winged Goose is a visitor to the lucerne lands.
African Fish Eagle, African Spoonbill and Red-billed Teal are sometimes present on the small dams.

While retaining the accepted East African name of Four-coloured Bush Shrike (no hyphen) we must agree that it really is a gorgeous bird and wish it were as visible as it is vocal.
Although we have come across confusion in an UK Ministry of Agriculture database between an African Orange-bellied Parrot and an Australian Orange-bellied Parrot (a rare and endangered species) such cases are rare and that is why scientific names are used.

 Birdfinders - Birdwatching Holidays - Ghana
In a broad belt across the centre of the country lies an extenive tract of pristine, broad-leaved Guinea woodlands, which, in the far north, gives way to dry Sahelian savanna.
Closer to Kakum we hope to find African Pygmy-goose, Allen's Gallinule, Yellow-crowned Bishop and a variety of other water-associated birds at a small lily-covered lake.
We will take notice of Safari Ant activity, not only in order to avoid their painful bites, but also as they provide us with our best opportunity for viewing shy ant-attending birds such as the three species of bristlebill, Fire-crested and Brown-chested Alethe, Forest Robin and White-tailed Ant-thrush.
