  Ballota africana
A popular herb in the Cape, Ballota africana is easy to identify by its soft-grey, aromatic foliage and old brown calyces that remain long after the flowers have lost their colour.
Along this wide distribution Ballota africana is usually found along streams, in the shelter of rocks and bushes, and as a pioneer in disturbed places.
africana was presented as a narcotic (erroneously) and used in the proceedings against the accused, C.A. van der Merwe for the murder of his wife.

The John Henrik Clarke Africana Library, located at the Center, provides a specialized collection concentrating on the social, economic, and political dimensions of the history and cultures of peoples of African descent.

A concentration in Africana Studies consists of nine courses: Introduction to Africana Studies; a 400-level seminar taken in the senior year; the Senior Program; and six approved electives.
Before electing a concentration in Africana Studies, students must meet with the director to design a program of study, planning in advance so that they will be able to complete departmental prerequisites for courses counting toward the concentration.
Students must submit a concentration proposal to the Africana Studies Program Committee (which consists of the director and at least one other faculty member), explaining the relations between the areas to be studied.
