Africus is the most significant modern art event on the African continent and since its inception in 1995 has joined such major international art events as the Biennials of Venice, Habana and Sydney, as well as the Documenta of Kassel.
In 1995 Africus drew the participation of some of the world's most important cultural figures and practitioners including Rasheed Araeen, founder of the journal Third Text, the critic and art historian Thomas McEvilley, Christopher Bond of the Australia National Museum, and a host of international artists from around the world.
In preparing for the second Africus due in 1997, the organizers of the Biennial and the city of Johannesburg have sought to avoid some of the pitfalls of the first Biennial.
