Sun Ra and George Clinton were both obvious fans, and while neither of these two treaded similar aesthetic territory, both took the dominant musical idioms of their times and wedded them to surreal sci-fi imagery — an attempt to break not only musical conventions but also transcend the deep despair of crumbling inner city life.
Sure, his terse beats and delirious synthesizers have little in common with his ideological forbearers, but his work in the rap game found the boundaries that existed in that nascent scene and blew them to smithereens.
Afrika Bambaataa has done his part for this great musical nation, and in all honesty deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as folks like Sun Ra and George Clinton for his endlessly palatable contributions and his groundbreaking, genre-defying scope.

Those early luminaries like Kool Herc, a Jamaican immigrant who is called the grandfather of hip hop, Afrika Bambaata, Grandmaster Flash, and all the other early New York DJs and MCs made a strong impression on Islam.
Other practitioners like Grandmaster Flash and Afrika Bambaata would expand upon the cutting skills, and the early MCs would improve upon the early rudimentary exhortations to more elaborate, rhyming raps.
Throughout the '70s, Bambaata and Herc would stage DJing battles in city parks, while a legion of breakdancers, also called B-Boys and B-Girls, were developing elaborate and spontaneous dance moves the likes of which had never been seen before.

Scratch | Cast & Crew | MTV Movies
While rappers may be the most visible musical exponents of hip-hop culture, it's the DJs (or "turntablists," as some prefer to be called) who generate the funky beats and cut-and-paste musical structures that have made hip-hop the dominant musical phenomena of the past 20 years.
Scratch is a documentary that examines the role of the DJ in hip-hop music, from the pioneering work of old school hip-hop artists like Afrika Bambaata and Jazzy Jay to contemporary masters like noted trip-hop musician DJ Shadow and award-winning turntablist group Invisibl Skratch Piklz.
The film also explores how DJs turned the turntable into a musical instrument, the increasingly elaborate techniques involved in "scratching" (manipulating vinyl discs, turntables, and tone arms to produce different sonic effects), and how different turntablists dig up the rare and elusive LPs from which they draw the samples that they craft into new songs.

The first I'd encountered before, most clearly in a selection of tracks which Afrika Bambaata put together as a list of his favourite tunes.
If you'd been to one of Bambaata's early parties this is what you would have heard him play; music from the roots of rap.
Again like the Bambaata selection it's very macho (in quite a noticably Gay manner) and strongly "rock-like", kind of a freight train out-of-control sound, rolling amplified frug music taking the lead from Sly and The Family Stone's "Stand"-era sound (less so "There's a Riot" which is more conspicuosly sinister, bloodless and synthesised.)

 Afrika Bambaata Biography
Bronx DJ-turned-hip-hop-godfather Bambaataa not only created the record that thrust beatbox electro-funk into the '80s and brought Kraftwerk onto the dancefloor, he has made pioneering sides with numerous performers and established himself as a major figure in contemporary music.
The individual tracks are fine, but the lack of focus leaves this plainly commercial effort more a various artists sampler than a cohesive Bambaataa creation.
