  Afrikakorps
THE Deutsches Afrikakorps (DAK) was formed on 19th February 1941 and consisted (and only ever consisted) of 5th leichte Division and 15th Panzer Division.
However, Afrikakorps is often used to refer to all Rommel's German troops in North Africa.
The Afrikakorps became an elite force by surviving in the harsh African environment, overcoming numerically superior foe and by gaining the respect and even admiration of those it fought against.

In March 1941, the leading elements of the Deutsches Afrikakorps (DAK) landed in Libya to assist the Italian Army which had been pushed back by British forces to the Gulf of Sidra.
This fighting gave rise to the myth of the Afrikakorps, carefully fed by the propaganda machine back in Germany, and most of all the legend of Rommel, the 'hero of the sun' admired by his own men and his enemies alike.
This book follows the history of the Afrikakorps (later, the Panzer-Armee Afrika) in Libya and Egypt, from March 1941 until the front was stabilised on the Mareth Line in Tunisia in February 1943.

Mussolini's attempt to re-establish an African empire for Italy had, by late 1940, resulted in nearly total defeat at the hands of the British and the strong danger that Italy would be driven out of North Africa.
Hitler was determined to maintain the Theatre of Operations, keeping the British committed to keeping men and resources in the desert and so was formed the famous military unit, the Deutsches Afrikakorps.
The rush to form an expeditionary force and the fact that a new tropical scheme was yet to be finalized resulted in the first vehicles to arrive in North Africa to still be overall dark grey.

The action in Toujane was part of a larger attack on the Mareth Line, a heavily fortified set of German defensive positions known as the Maginot Line of Africa.
Nonetheless, in heavy fighting in 1943 Montgomery managed to break through Rommel's line and flank him, marking the beginning of the end for the Afrikakorps.
The challenges of fighting in Toujane and the close coordination of tanks, infantry, and even air support seen in this mission make this an excellent and intensive battle that was historically decisive.
