The Head Heeb: Comment on Stand on Zanzibar
And to answer your second question, YES, CCM was formed in 1977 by the merger of the Tanganyika African National Union(TANU) (the party that peacefully obtained independence the mainland's independence from the Brits) and the Afro-Shiraz Party(ASP) (the party that violently overthrew the (Arab) Sultan on January 12 1964.
Apparently the Africans and Shirazis (Persian-African half-castes) were feeling a bit oppressed by the Arabs at the time and when the English handed power over to the Sultan under an arrangement that left the Arab elite in power, lets just say they were NOT pleased AT ALL.
The CCM has sometimes tried to paint the CUF as an Arabist or Islamist party, but this isn't really the case.

 POLITICAL BACKGROUND
Several political parties were formed in the late 1950s and early 1960s, including the Zanzibar Nationalist Party (ZNP) representing the dominant Arab and "Arabised" minority, and the Afro-Shirazi Party (ASP) representing the indigenous and African majority population.
The parties also agreed to hold by-elections on Pemba in 2003, and a bi-partisan Joint Presidential Supervisory Commission was established to oversee implementation according to an agreed timetable.
After the 1972 assassination of President Karume, however, the Zanzibar government gradually became less autonomous, and in 1977 the ruling ASP party merged with the governing Tanganyikan African National Union (TANU) on the mainland to form the Chama cha Mapinduzi (The Party of the Revolution, or CCM).

Arabic language - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Arabic (العربية al-'arabiyyah, or less formally 'arabi) is the largest member of the Semitic branch of the Afro-Asiatic language family (classification: South Central Semitic) and is closely related to Hebrew and Aramaic.
Arabic has been a literary language since at least the 6th century and is the liturgical language of Islam.
Since the written Arabic of today differs substantially from the written Arabic of the Qur'anic era, it has become customary in western scholarship and among non-Arab scholars of Arabic to refer to the language of the Qur'an as Classical Arabic and the modern language of the media and of formal speeches as Modern Standard Arabic.
