The Afro-Asian Games held at Hyderabad, India in 2003 were the first such instance of a sporting event involving the two continents.
The organizers hailed the 1st Afro-Asian Games a great success and several high-ranking officials hinted that the city would have interest to bid for the Commonwealth Games and even the 2016 Olympic Games.
Asian athletes were stronger in swimming, shooting, boxing, weightlifting and field hockey, while African countries took an upper hand in athletics, especially in long distance running.

Originally the games were meant to invite the top four teams and top four individuals from each continent (from the recently concluded African Games and last years Asian Games) to compete in the Afro-Asian Games.
The games will supposedly pit the winners of the 2002 Asian Games, held last year in October, against the winners of the 2003 African Games, to be held this coming October.
The Games are to be held from October 24 to November 2.
