Afrophobia is primarily a racial and, to a somewhat lesser extent, cultural phenomenon, lacking a strong religious dimension.
The term "Afrophobia" is sometimes used with this ironic metonymy in mind, using the fear of the Afro as a metaphor for the fear of one's African heritage.
As in Europe, Afrophobia was heavily associated with the trans-Atlantic slave trade and itself defined the parameters of the institution of slavery; it became a part of the domestic cultural and political landscape that endures to the present day.

While this latter scheme, known as Project 200, was eventually halted by the activism of Chinatown and Strathcona residents, its first phase, the building of the Georgia Viaduct, wiped out two of the most active blocks of the Alley in 1971.
But by that time, due to the aforementioned slow-thaw of Afrophobia, and due to a series of hostile City Council zoning bylaws which discouraged residential improvements in Strathcona, most of the area's fl population had already dispersed throughout Greater Vancouver.
These historical events underpin the present situation of Vancouver's 17,000 fls, a situation in which there is no centralized community.
