Afrosoricida - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
However, there have always been opinions suggesting that Tenrecomorpha, or at least the golden moles, are not true Lipotyphlans.
Some biologists use Tenrecomorpha as the name for the tenrec-golden mole clade, but prevailing evidence suggests Afrosoricida is more appropriate and Tenrecomorpha is used here as the name of the tenrec suborder.
The Afrosoricida are sometimes considered part of the Afroinsectiphilia, a clade within the Afrotheria.

Instead, the closest relatives of pseudungulates are the Afrosoricida; the Pseudungulata and Afrosoricida make up the Afrotheria.
Molecular phylogenetic studies have suggested that Perissodactyla and Cetartiodactyla are closest to Carnivora and Pholidota rather than to the Pseudungulata.
The Pseudungulata are by some scientists united with the Afrosoricida in the cohort or super-order Afrotheria based on molecular and DNA analysis.

 Tenrec Systematics
The existence of this clade, and its affinities with other Afrotherian taxa, is strongly supported by phylogenies based on nuclear and mitochondrial DNA sequences (Madsen et al., 2001; Murphy et al., 2001) and protein sequence signatures (van Dijk et al.
(2003) reluctantly accepted Afrosoricida as the ordinal name for this clade, a treatment followed by Bronner and Jenkins (in press) who argue that the alternative (and earlier) names "Tenrecoidea" and "Tenrecomorpha" are unsuitable.
Subordinal distinction between the tenrecs (Tenrecomorpha) and golden moles (Chrysochloridea) has been motivated based on analyses of both morphological (Butler, 1972, 1988; MacPhee and Novacek, 1993) analyses and the above mentioned molecular studies indicating an early phylogenetic divergence.

The hedgehogs (erinaceomorphs) are easily identified by their thick covering of spines.
The litter size varies between species, though is generally between 2 and 4, after a gestation period of just over a month.
The moles are morphologically very similar to the golden moles of the Afrosoricida.

 Paleocene mammals of the world
This would not be surprising from the point of view of molecular studies which place the orders Chiroptera and Lipotyphla close to each other on the family tree of mammals (7, 8).
Due to the scarcity of the African record of early Tertiary mammals, we have little clues about the early history of the endemic African insectivores of the order Afrosoricida.
Splitting between the different groups of Afrotheria must therefore have started at least well within the Paleocene, making it is highly probable that the Afrosoricida are also an ancient group of mammals.

Filled and open bars indicate where the QLLC signature is assumed to have evolved and disappeared, respectively.
In B it is equally parsimonious to have the signature evolve twice, in the ancestor of Afrosoricida and the aardvark-elephant shrew-paenungulate clade, respectively.
