Extra time - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Extra time is an additional period played at the end of some games of football (soccer) if the score is tied after the two standard periods (halves) of play.
Extra time should not be confused with the time added on to each period by the referee in allowance for time lost through substitutions, timewasting, injuries, etc (such time being part of the period concerned).
Extra time is also used in other football codes, among them rugby union and rugby league.

Away goals rule - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
If the score is still level overall and level on away goals after extra time, then a penalty shootout decides which team advances.
In English football, two-legged matches in the League Cup are only subject to the away goals rule after extra time; even if one team leads on away goals after 90 minutes of the second leg, extra time is played regardless.
In 2003, AC Milan beat Internazionale on the away goals rule in a Champions League semi-final, after drawing 0-0 and 1-1, even though both legs were played in the San Siro stadium, which the two clubs share.

Playing time lost as a result of any such permitted delay or of delay in taking a kick at goal shall be made up in that half of the match in which the delay occurred, subject to the power vested in the referee to declare no-side before time has expired.

At the King Hassan II International Cup Tournament in Morocco in 1998, the penalty kick shootout was used at the end of regulation time in England's scoreless draw with Belgium although elimination from the tournament was not at stake.
An extra tournament point was awarded for winning a penalty kick contest in matches drawn after 90 minutes, and penalty kick goals were included in the goals for and goals against columns in the tournament table, both measures taken to break deadlocks in the team standings.
If no team has won the shootout after all the eligible players from each of the teams have taken a kick, the kicks rotation starts again, although the teams may change the order in which their players take the kicks for the second and subsequent go-rounds.

There is no break in play between the two periods of extra-time other than the time it takes the teams to change ends, although the players invariably take the opportunity to swig from water bottles.
It meant that a full 30 minutes of extra-time must be played in all tournament elimination matches in which the teams are level on goals at the end of regulation time, followed by a penalty kick shootout if the score is still level at the end of extra-time.
After regulation time ended with the teams level at 1-1, neither team scored during the first 15-minute period of extra-time.

Extra time isn't the same as stoppage time (called injury time in the UK, although it also allows for othet stoppages).
In the present world cup injury time has been advertised by a fourth official (the 'spare' referee who is there in case the referee gets injured) holding up an electronic board with the number of addtional minutes to be played.
