Amazon.com: Afterglow: Music: Sarah McLachlan   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
On Afterglow, her first studio album since 1997's Surfacing, McLachlan’s music is as tempered as ever; at times even the piano chords at the heart of the sound are tucked neatly beneath layer upon layer of strings and overdubbed voices.
The title Afterglow is apt, for these songs leave a warm, quiet feeling in your soul.
Her life's changed from the response to the album, and from personal growth and new beginnings in her family.

Their first album, World of Noise was released by an Indie label in 1993.
On the new album, the punk style has become less of a centerpoint in the music.
One of the most popular singles from this album "I Will Buy You a New Life" is a song of perseverance and doing whatever you can do make the best of what you have.

  Crowded House Album Reviews
Of course, as with all Crowded House albums it is Finn who dominates, and though this album isn't his finest moment from a songwriting standpoint, it doesn’t deserve its status as the forgotten Crowded House album.
Perhaps the album is also a few songs longer than it needs to be (the "hidden track" is terrible), but pop music doesn’t get much better than the gorgeous “Fall At Your Feet,” the delightfully breezy and romantic “Weather For You,” and the devastatingly moving “She Goes On,” a love letter to a dearly departed.
Afterglow (Capitol ‘99) Rating: B+ Given that Crowded House only have four fine albums, their Recurring Dream: The Very Best Of Crowded House (1996) compilation wasn't really all that useful, though it did have three previously unreleased tracks ("Not The Girl You Think You Are," "Instinct," and "Everything Is Good For You").

PIXELSURGEON | Reviews | Music | Sarah McLachlan
The new album is a continuation of her multi-layered style of emotional story telling.
Since her last album Sarah lost her mother to cancer, and has become a mother herself and these two life altering events surface in this album.
The hit single "Fallen" is probably one of the more up-tempo tracks on the whole album and after hearing this over and over on the radio I had great expectations for the rest of the album.

Review | Afterglow by Crowded House
But when a band releases an album full of oddities, demos and songs that never made it to disc or were never meant to be included on a recording, then clearly this album is meant for a narrower audience: the True Fan.
Rather than putting the songs in order of the date they were originally recorded, they are compiled to flow one to another, taking the listener gently through, flitting back and forth in time and not just bashing one song against another regardless of its history.
Written in 1985, it's the oldest song on the album and is reminiscent of later Split Enz.

Afterglow - Sarah McLachlan - Song Listings
During the mid-'90s, Sarah McLachlan was a near-ubiquitous presence in pop music, establishing adult alternative pop radio with 1994's Fumbling Toward Ecstasy and 1997's Surfacing and spearheading the popular Lilith Fair touring festival, but once the last Lilith wound up in 1999, she retreated from the spotlight, had a baby, and seemingly retired from music.
Afterglow is firmly within the McLachlan signature sound -- a softly tuneful, mildly atmospheric blend of classic singer/songwriterism and a touch of vaguely dreamy alternative pop, all shined and immaculately produced by Pierre Marchand.
Prior to its release, the album was touted as the first collection of songs she wrote entirely on piano, not guitar, but ultimately this doesn't make much of a difference to the overall feel and effect of the album, which perfectly dovetails with Surfacing.

As far as tone goes, the album leans more towards the brighter aspects of the Crowded House and Woodface albums, as most of the songs were recorded in those periods.
The album is a nice collection that flows pretty well, and there are probably a number of groups that would like a collection of songs this strong to be their greatest hits album.

This Album was released by Michael Andrews on 05/31/2005
His use of period (1980s) synths and a voxophone, tastefully punctuated by sparse choral arrangements, evoke a Danny Elfman score leached of bombast and quivering in its naked form.
Due to the sparse, six-million-dollar budget of the movie, the producers had to decide whether or not to include celluloid-only tracks like "Killing Moon" by Echo & the Bunnymen and "Under the Milky Way" by the Church or pay for the special effects.

Now she is reemerging into the performing and recording limelight again with Afterglow, a record of many layers, and an upcoming concert tour.
From the reflective first single, "Fallen", to the love-inspired lyrics of "Push", to the gorgeous, whispered tones of "Answer", there are many melodies on Afterglow that showcase her strengths.
Her new work is a tapestry of cumulative life experiences: a collection of beautiful melodies, lush instrumentation, occasionally surprising lyrics, and a musical whole that is yet another reminder of just how talented this artist is. As McLachlan puts it: “Taking a break and walking away was the best thing I could have done.

The album was preceded by the "Mo' Pop" single in the summer of 1999..
On her debut solo album Allison tackles a host of instruments and an even wider range of emotions, sometimes in the space of a single song (check the desperate/ecstatic mantra "Message Personnel").
But if Afterglow is ambitious, it's also focused, and Dot has come up with a set of almost weightless songs that play perfectly to her strengths.

The unreleased residue of popular recording careers is typically the stuff of box-set "extra" discs and sometimes suspicious reissue "bonus tracks." Even the Beatles' vaunted Anthology series argued that serving up leftovers as a main course is a risky proposition at best.
Afterglow, a collection of 13 surplus tracks from New Zealand popmeisters Crowded House, fares better than most such efforts, if only because of the old-fashioned dedication to songcraft that Neil Finn and company displayed throughout their career.
I eagerly await the album of home demos hinted at in the liner notes, if this is the kind of thing I can expect.

Because of the aforementioned qualities, Everclear's 'So Much for the Afterglow' comes across much better in hi-res than most hard rock discs, which lack the necessary textures and dynamics to make a slab of sound much more than a slab of sound, no matter how hi the res.
This is one of those instances where the hi-res (DVD-A or SACD) version of an album actually changes one's impression...making it seem an even better album than it already was.
Although 'So Much For the Afterglow' lacks the last word in openess and transparency, relative to most hard rock albums I've heard in hi-res, it is mixed quite well.

The majority of the album features tracks that were recorded during the "Woodface" sessions, so their greatness does not come as a surprise as "Woodface" was one of the bands best albums.
