 The Afterword - Mike Bryan
The Afterword claims to be the author's afterword to a novel written by a 'Mike Bryan' called The Deity Next Door, appended to a "handsome new edition" of that book.
All this self-aggrandizing is particularly irritating: Bryan does not lay anywhere near enough foundation for it, and it comes across as him whining to the reader that what he has to say is of great importance, utterly convincing, and would be embraced by the masses (if they were aware of it).
Since The Afterword is essentially an echo of The Deity Next Door (recounting the same story, with some explanatory notes and without the fictional padding) he implies that it too should be taken as seriously as The Deity Next Door.

 SparkNotes: Number the Stars: Afterword
Annemarie is a fictional character, but Lowry was inspired to create her by real stories that come from a friend of Lowry's, Annelise Platt (the novel is dedicated to her) who was a child in Denmark during the years of the war.
An Afterword like this one is important to a novel based so heavily on historical fact.
In this way, the Afterword to Number the Stars acts as a memorial to all the real people who inspired the fictional characters of the novel.

"Afterword" - UsingEnglish.com ESL Forum   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
Hello, I am looking for a word that would mean "afterword," the meaning of which would be similar to "foreword," but to mean after not before.
For instance, epilogue does not satisfy me, because the word I'm looking for is to be used in journal (at the end of an issue).
It's usually a summary or a critical commentary by someone other than the author of the main work, but it doesn't have to be.

 Book Concerns: The Afterword
It is a fictionalized “afterword” of a best-selling novel that doesn’t exist.
The Afterword addresses the reactions detractors and critics of the nonexistent novel, The Deity Next Door; it is written from the first person point of view of the fictional author, with his personal anecdotes about the route taken to writing the book.
The Afterword, through its interesting presentation, also offers light scholarly examinations of Christian faith in contemporary society.

 Transgressing the Boundaries: An Afterword
Alas, the editors of Social Text have discovered that my article, ``Transgressing the Boundaries: Toward a Transformative Hermeneutics of Quantum Gravity'', which appeared in Social Text #46/47, is a parody.
In view of the important intellectual and political issues raised by this episode, they have generously agreed to publish this (non-parodic) Afterword, in which I explain my motives and my true views.
In particular, the fact that I have parodied an extreme or ambiguously stated version of an idea does not exclude that I may agree with a more nuanced or precisely stated version of the same idea.

Telecommunications Policy Review Panel - Afterword
In this Afterword, the Panel deals with two related issues that were not specifically made part of its mandate, but that significantly affect the future of the Canadian telecommunications industry:
These linkages have led the Panel to use this Afterword to suggest possible future approaches that the government might use to resolve the long-standing policy debates over the issues.
Earlier in this Afterword, the Panel suggests that the proposed broadcasting policy review should resolve issues related to the separation of Canadian broadcasting "content" policy from policies for the "carriage" of telecommunications.

Janice Shriek, a failed gallery owner and journalist, has ostensibly created an afterword to The Early History of Ambergris by her brother, Duncan Shriek, a talented if unconventional historian who finds his career in shambles after his controversial theories concerning Ambergris's founding and the genocide perpetrated against its nonhuman inhabitants gain public disfavor.
What is remarkable about Shriek: An Afterword is the way it combines such surreal imagery with intensely human feeling.

Through an intensive clinical study of forty incest victims and numerous interviews with professionals in mental health, child protection, and law enforcement, Judith Herman develops a composite picture of the incestuous family.
In a new afterword, Herman offers a lucid and thorough overview of the knowledge that has developed about incest and other forms of sexual abuse since this book was first published.
Reviewing the extensive research literature that demonstrates the validity of incest survivors' sometimes repressed and recovered memories, she convincingly challenges the rhetoric and methods of the backlash movement against incest survivors, and the concerted attempt to deny the events they find the courage to describe.

AFTERWORD: ON CLINTON SMALLNESS--BRINKLEY MISSES THE POINT (CLINTON'S HOFSTRA APOLOGIA)
One of the American historians I most admire, Douglas Brinkley out there, sitting here, was quoted in the paper today as saying that I would be viewed as a great president except for the fact of the impeachment, which is just there.
A person's 'course of conduct' while not particularly criminal could be of such a nature that it destroys trust, discourages allegiance, and demands action by the Congress...The office of the President is such that it calls for a higher level of conduct than the average citizen in the United States."
