		Against a Dark Background tells the story of a noble-woman, Sharrow, and a group of her friends as they travel around the planet Golter and its neighbours.
		They are they are in search of the last Lazy Gun, a devastating weapon with a sense of humour, and they are pursued by the Huhsz, a religious cult who wish to kill Sharrow to ensure the birth of their prophet.
		Sharrow's own past seems to mirror the violent history of the planet, the story pits her against both of them, and the ending of the book leaves little room for optimism about anything but survival, either for her, or for Golter.

	Review of Iain M. Banks's Against a Dark Background
		Against a Dark Background is Banks' fourth science fiction novel and first such non-Culture book.
		But with Against a Dark Background, Banks proves that he is one of the masters of world-building, in this case with the planet of Golter, ancient, decrepit, and isolated by a million light years from the rest of the galaxy.
		Against a Dark Background is indeed dark, and grim, and disturbing, but not much more so than Consider Phlebas or The Player of Games.

		Starting at random with Against A Dark Background as I have I find it to be quite an enjoyable piece of space opera and conspiracy.
		The darkness of the title comes from the success of Sharrow's flight, how the enemy always seems to be so close.
		Against A Dark Background works well enough that I will be likely to read more Iain M. Banks in the near future.

	Steven Wu's Book Reviews: Against a Dark Background (Iain M Banks)
		Against a Dark Background is no different, but it falls below the standards of Banks's previous novels due to its awful ending.
		After a very confusing start, Against a Dark Background swiftly settles into the pattern of a caper story, with Sharrow and her crew haring after one precious artifact after another in a sequence that will hopefully lead to the Lazy Gun.
		The story also benefits from a deep sense of history: Golter and its system are deeply aware of their history, despite the fact that many records were destroyed by the two dreadful Wars that have afflicted the civilization.
