The Night of the Long Knives (1934) (German, Nacht der langen Messer), also known as Reichsmordwoche or "the Blood Purge", was a lethal purge of potential political rivals in the Sturmabteilung (also known as the SA or brownshirts), paramilitary wing of the Nazi Party.
The Night of the Long Knives was a significant prelude to life in Nazi Germany, and its use of terror to eliminate dissent—expanding later into the Holocaust.
In Nazi-propaganda the purge was disguised as the supression of a fictitious Röhm-Putsch, i.

The real primetime battle in the next broadcast television season will be on Tuesday, an up-for-grabs night on which all six networks have tinkered with at least one-third of their lineups.
That makes the night perhaps the most representative evening of what the new fall schedule has to offer.
The networks are loading Tuesday with some of their best shows because, unlike Monday or Thursday, the night currently lacks a dominant show or network.

"Against the Fall of Night" is closer to a short novel, and was actually rewritten by Clarke as the novel The City and the Stars.
"Night" has very little more substance to it story-wise, since it's just the same "discovery" plot over and over as new wonders are uncovered.
As to the wonders themselves, they're clearly intended to be the stars of the show; but to today's readers, intelligent machines and underground transport centers may seem like pretty standard sci-fi fare.

Against the Fall of Night (Book Review)
So it is with Arthur C. Clarke and his firstborn story, Against the Fall of Night.
In the preface to the edition I am reviewing—a special collection that also includes Gregory Benford's sequel Beyond the Fall of Night—Clarke describes in a 1989 letter from his home in Colombo, Sri Lanka, how Against the Fall of Night came into being.
Speaking of major mysteries, Against the Fall of Night finds mankind several billion years in the future, confined not only to a dried-up Earth but to only a small patch of the globe.

One of Clarke's early novels, Against the Fall of Night, has long been recognized as among his very best; the tale of a young man's need to escape from the limits of the last cities on Earth, it combines the author's scientific know-how with his yen for mysticism and metaphysics.
Coauthored by two talented sf veterans, this sequel to Clarke's Against the Fall of Night (1946) is highly recommended.
Having read some of Gregory Benford's work, I was greatly disapointed by "Beyond the Fall Of Night." His attempt to spin an addition on Clarke's short novel was a blunder.
