I think this is the album where Bad Religion started to go off into their own realm instead of sticking with the same formula.
Against the Grain 5/5 - one of My favorites, but as per usually I hate the lyrics but the song is just so magesetically put together.

With naturally bad sound quality and four odd cover songs comprising the material, the only real value to the seven inch record is knowing you have something that Greg Graffin does not (but is rumored to want a copy of, possibly to destroy since this isn't exactly demonstrative of how amazing Bad Religion is).
The youthful Bad Religion was nothing more than a second tier L.A. band during the first phase of their existence, when all the members were youthful teens bashing out tunes in a garage.
The ironic benefit of this tragedy is that Bad Religion recruited the youthful Brooks Wackerman to man the drum kit and his raging energy catapulted the band from the midpaced doldrums of the past two albums.

It can be said that it's a once-in-a-lifetime chance, or perhaps even a fluke, for a band to release an album that completely changed the genre it was born out of.
Not to be outdone, Jay lays down some awesome bass throughout the album, especially in tracks like Against The Grain as well as a mini-solo in Turn On The Light.
Against The Grain is my personal anthem and favorite, a tension-building rollercoaster featuring some simply AWESOME lyrics, a relentlessly driving pace, dynamic shifts, as well as some decidedly non-punk guitar harmonizing and quick palm-muting slithering around each other.

After Bad Religion broke up, reformed, broke up, and then reformed, their 1991 effort Against the Grain exposed the band's enormous growth and, in particular, Greg Gaffin's enormous vocabulary via his Cornell education and subsequent teaching career.

TheContrast.net » Blog Archive » Bad Religion - “Against The Grain”
Against The Grain is undeniably one of their best early records, the pace is constant (ie fast!) the production is crisp, the bass grinding and the melodies and voices stiring.
Although this album doesn’t really demonstrate the diversity of composition that later releases such as “Recipe For Hate” and Stranger Than Fiction” possess it has a glorious urgency and spark.
Now, after a career spanning 25 years, this seminal album stands up as a vital recording, a benchmark for many other, and not so original, punk bands to draw influence from.
