Agamemnon is a tragedy that was first performed in Athens, Greece, in 458 B.C., along with two other plays: The Libation Bearers (also called Choephori, Choëphoroe, and Choephoroi in English transliterations from Greek) and The Eumenides.
The climax of the play is the murder of Agamemnon and Cassandra.
The purple carpet therefore appears to symbolize (1) the pride, or hubris, that afflicts Agamemnon as conqueror of Troy and King of Argos; (2) the wrath of Clytemnestra; and (3) the bloody death that awaits Agamemnon.

Agamemnon is the first in a trilogy of short plays known as The Orestia written by the Greek playwright Aeschylus (525 B.C.-456 B.C.) two years before his death.
Agamemnon opens with a night watchman who feels something is not quite right in Argos, yet cannot put his finger on what it is. Later on a herald recounts the journey home from Troy and hopes that the future will be smoother than the previous ten years.
Aeschylus does not depict Agamemnon to be the imposing general that led an army against Troy, but rather a wishy-washy figurehead who could be persuaded to sacrifice his daughter, or to defy the gods by walking on silk carpets.

But, before we broach the idea of staging in a Greek play like Aeschylus' Agamemnon, it is important to consider the mechanics of physical space in the Greek theatre, and to give an outline of the relevant elements in staging, as it is found to permeate the texts in hints and stage directions.
Plays which survive from Greek tragedy are complex in their ideas, in their language and their plot, -such was the expectation of the first Athenians who witnessed them.
Aeschylus in his play Agamemnon manipulates this limitation creatively by using it to suggest a spiritual or psychological boundary existing both within and outside of the Atreidai Palace doors, -a visual translation of the doors into the skene area of the stage.

One way of approaching this play, in fact, is to see it primarily as an exploration of the adequacy of the revenge ethic as a proper basis for justice in the community and the movement towards a more civilized, effective, and rational way of judging crimes in the polis.
Agamemnon interprets his treatment of Troy as revenge for the crime of Paris and Helen; Clytaemnestra interprets her killing of Agamemnon as revenge for the sacrifice of Iphigeneia; Aegisthus interprets his role in the killing of Agamemnon as revenge for the treatment of his half-brothers by Agamemnon's father, Atreus.
In Aeschylus's first play, by contrast, the problems of a city divided against itself by the inadequacy of the revenge ethic become the major focus of the second and third plays, which seek to find a way through the impasse.

GradeSaver: Agamemnon Essay: Analysis of Tragedy in Agamemnon
Because of the historical and political context of the play, Agamemnon's decision to sacrifice his daughter could be deemed as a logical decision, especially since the sacrifice was for the sack of Troy and the victory of the Greek army.
Now, Agamemnon's responsibility for the bloodshed of his daughter for the sake of ambition is another ill-fated curse that has come upon his household for which the consequence will be his own death.
In a sense, Agamemnon's sacrifice of his daughter is somewhat justified in that if he did not obey the command of the goddess, Artemis, it would have led to utter destruction of his army and of the honor code he must follow in order to be a noble ruler.

The play, however, is still plagued by the sense of darkness despite the signal lights of hope.
This highlights the feeling in the play of the looming fate that is certain to be exacted, but the consequences of which are still unclear.
Agamemnon is similarly distressed when debating the sacrifice of his daughter which also illustrates the dominant concern of the threat of divine justice (Agamemnon 205-207).
