On her way to Pearl Harbor she set sail on 1 May for the Caribbean Sea, emerged on the Pacific side of the Panama Canal on 9 May and stopped off in San Diego, California, through 21 May and arrived at Pearl Harbor on 31 May.
She again tried to enter the harbor on 8 December, but was driven off by depth-bombs from a patrol plane, before USS Thornton (AVD-11) finally arrived to provide safe-conduct for the boat at midday.
Newly refitted, Thresher departed the west coast on 8 October and arrived at Pearl Harbor one week later and commenced her tenth war patrol as she departed the Hawaiian Islands on 1 November, bound for the waters north of the Caroline Islands.

The capital of Guam is situated at the mouth of the Agana River and 5 miles north of the Apra Harbor, Agana's port of entry and the island's chief port.
Developed by Spain in the 16th Century, Agana serves as the administrative center of Spain's Pacific island holdings.
Agana has several historical sites of note, including the Dulce Nombre de Maria, or Agana Cathedral, built by the Spanish in 1699 and the Latte Stone Park, whose pillars date from over two thousand years ago and are believed to be house pillars used by the ancient Chamorro people in the construction of homes.

Most of the stations were located in or near heavily traveled areas, and the Agana station was located in a populated area approximately 1 mile west of (and downwind from) the former APP.
ATSDR recognizes that the fires in Agana Swamp might cause trace amounts of contaminants to be released from sediments.
Because these fire conditions are not consistent with those that occur at Agana Swamp, it is difficult to predict whether or not adverse health effects would occur among Guam residents exposed to smoke from swamp fires.

The troops fired their weapons - the shots were heard in the Plaza de Espana in Agana where a defending force had mustered and established its fields of fire.
The island's Baptist church, also in Agana, was also seized; Japanese officials used the first floor of the church as a storage area for food, and the second floor was utilized as a Shinto shrine.

A 1790 Spanish period double arch bridge spans the river and was part of the Spanish period trail from the capital city of Agana to Umatac, where the silver-laden Manila Galleons anchored from the 1790s to 1815.
The large harbor behind Cabras Island was an important prize of battle in the months following the recapture of Guam.
With this advanced naval base, the best deep-water port between Pearl Harbor and Manila Bay, the US was able to accelerate its offensive during the last year of the war.

NAS Agana, now known as Tiyan, was operationally closed on March 31, 1995.
The former officer housing site consisting of 92 acres (37.3 hectares) was not included in the 1993 base closure for NAS Agana, however it was later included as part of a 1995 base closure action and was proposed for disposal under a separate disposal action.
The ROD announces the Navy’s decision to dispose of property associated with Naval Air Station Agana in a manner that is consistent with the reuse plan prepared by the Government of Guam and is in keeping with the Defense Department’s community-based reuse objectives.

 Apra Harbor
The Inner Harbor is entered from the southeast portion of the Outer Harbor through a passage between Polaris Point on the east and the Ship Repair Facility (SRF) on the west.
Local harbor personnel refer to the passage as the "SRF Cut." Vessels entering the Inner Harbor are limited to a maximum draft of 32 ft (9.8 m).
Large aircraft carriers have anchored in the outer harbor on infrequent occasions in the past, but they would do so now only in an emergency because the entrance to the harbor is fouled by the required swinging diameter of the carrier.

At Agana's plaza the lightly-armed Guamanians, commanded by Marine First Lieutenant Charles S. Todd, stood off the early Japanese attacks, but their rifles and machine guns did not provide enough firepower to hold against a coordinated attack by the Dungcas Beach landing force.
The mission of the destroyers was implied in their designation as the Midway Neutralization Unit; they were to shell the atoll's air base on the night of 7 December while the Japanese carrier force retired from the Hawaiian area.
Authorities at Pearl Harbor were determined to get reinforcements to the atoll and within a week after VMSB-231 made its historic long flight from Oahu, two batteries of the 4th Defense Battalion with additional naval 3-inch and 7-inch guns for coast defense were being unloaded.

A message from Pearl Harbor was received early Monday morning, Dec. 8, that Pearl Harbor was being bombed by Japanese planes and that hostilities had been commenced.
While we were talking in front of the office, nine Japanese planes in a V-formation in groups of three passed to the south of Agana, heading toward Sumay, where the Marines Reservation, the contractors’ camp, the cable station and the Pan American Airways were situated.
It was also in the direction of the harbor, where the minelayer (USS) Penguin and the oil tanker Barnes were at anchor.

Umatac and the vicinity of Agana and Apra Harbor were apparently the only two areas of permanent Spanish settlements.
The fort originally dates at least from 150 years ago, and probably was first built by the Spaniards in the middle or late 18th century; the earliest reference to it I have found so far is that of William Haswell in 1802, as a "citadal" with seven guns and ten soldiers.
This bay has two forts, one on an island in the middle of the harbor of six guns and it commands the entrance of the inner harbor; the other Fort of four guns is on the high hill on the starboard.

Pre-war U.S. Military fortification of Guam was minimal, comprising of a naval base on the Orote Peninsula, military commissary, naval hospital in Agana, detention camp at Asan Beach, naval communication facilities, and a quartermaster depot at Asan Point.
The road was a primary circulation route linking Agana (the capital city) to the east, and Piti, to the southwest, and was therefore known as the Agana-Piti Road.
This road was constructed in 1911 from Agana to Libugon (near Nimitz Hill) where a new Naval Radio Antenna was located and was later extended (1915) to Mount Tenjo.

Like Agana Boat Basin "Rights" the spot is accessed by parking car in lot on right side of harbor.
The left at the harbor entrance is the main surf spot, although there is a ledgy right on the other side of the harbor that is ridden mostly by bodyboarders.
The harbor has been known to be polluted so watch out after rain and if you have open cuts.

The destroyer and her mates soon shifted their attention to Guam and destroyed many shore installations and gasoline dumps at Apra Harbor and Agana Harbor, besides blasting enemy airstrips well in advance of the landings scheduled for that island.
Proceeding via Eniwetok, Ulithi, and Pearl Harbor, the destroyer arrived at the Mare Island Navy Yard on 25 October for a major overhaul and completed that period of repairs and alterations on 6 December.
After local maneuvers out of Pearl Harbor during which she rescued three aviators from the water on 2 January 1945 Wadsworth set course via Ulithi for the Kossol Passage, Palau Islands.

I was a Boatswains Mate Third Class assigned to the U. Douglas A. Munro (DE 422) Homeported out of Pearl Harbor Hawaii and on an operational cruise for nine months (9) operating out of Agana Harbor in Guam.
We picked up some people from the Island of Kapinga Maringa Island and their cargo (pickled fish and associated plants) and took them back to Guam.

Located southwest of Agana, near the power plant, Magundas is at the end of a very long breakwater.
