 Agavaceae
In the American continent, the monocotyledons have diverged into a number of important families of succulent plants, including the Agavaceae which form distinctive rosettes and flower spikes.
The Agavaceae family includes Agave, Beschorneria, Furcraea, Hesperaloe, Manfreda, Polianthes, Prochnyanthes, and Yucca.
The genera Beaucarnea, Calibanus, Dasylirion and Nolina were formerly included in the Agavaceae but are now generally regarded as members of the Nolinaceae.

  Science Fair Projects - Agavaceae
Agavaceae is a family of plants that includes many well-known desert and dry zone types such as the agave, yucca, and Joshua tree.
Conversely, data from molecular systematics now suggest that Agavaceae should be broadened to include a number of genera previously classified elsewhere, among them Chlorogalum, Camassia and the family Anthericaceae with anything up to 22 additional genera.
In general, Agavaceae leaves occur as rosettes at the end of a woody stem, which may range from extremely short to tree-like heights, as in the Joshua tree.

As originally described by Gentry, Agavaceae consists of 18 genera and a little over 400 species, many of them native to western North America.
Gentry segregated agaves, yuccas, and other genera into their own family Agavaceae in the 1970s.

Development of Hesperaloe Species (Agavaceae) as New Fiber Crops
As in all Agavaceae, the basic module of growth is the rosette, a cluster of leaves produced from a single meristem.
The rate of regrowth during the first year after harvest appears to be much higher than the initial growth rate during the first year after stand establishment.
The literature on cultivated Agave species indicates the magnitude of yields that might be possible from perennial rosette plants in the Agavaceae.

However, the karyotype of 5 long and 25 short chromosomes for the Agavoideae and Yuccoideae is distinct from the karyotypes of the other subfamilies that Cronquist included in the Agavaceae.
Current research on the phylogenetics of moncotyledons, using DNA sequences of rbcL, support the separation of Dracaena, Nolina, and Dasylirion from Agavaceae (M. Duvall et al.
We believe that a broad interpretation of the Agavaceae unites groups that should be recognized as separate.
