Age grade - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In sociology and anthropology, an age grade or age class is a social category based on age, within a series of such categories, through which individuals pass over the course of their lives.
In tribal societies entry into an age grade -generally gender-separated- is often marked by an initiation rite, which may be the crowning of a long and complex preparation, sometimes in retreat.
In most cultures, age grade systems, as with age sets, are the preserve of men, and it is the older men who control a society's secret knowledge, collectively or restricted to a council of elders and/or specific positions such as shaman entrusted with the preparation of initiants.

age grade and age set - HighBeam Encyclopedia
AGE GRADE AND AGE SET [age grade and age set] differentiation of social role based on age, commonly found in small-scale societies of North America and East Africa.
Age sets are a type of sodality (nonresidential groups that cut across kinship ties and thus promote broader social solidarity) of young men who usually cooperate in secret ritual or craft performances together; individuals generally remain closely associated with their age set throughout their life.
Age grades may be marked by changes in biological state, such as puberty, or by socially recognized status changes such as marriage and the birth of a child.

With an age grading system, the 60 year old runner would then have as even a shot at the purse as they 40 year old.
A viewpoint often expressed regarding age grading is that the tables are too lenient towards the older masters.
With age adjusting they can compare their best effort at age 45 to their best at 50 and 55, and on and on until they run off into the sunset forever.

Some people think it is "natural," or even beneficial, for children to be confined with other children of approximately the same age for most of each school day, but this is a recent, mistaken idea promoted by education bureaucrats.
The fact is, however, that most American schools were ungraded until the second half of the nineteenth century, the graded school having been introduced in the United States in 1848, when the Quincy Grammar School in Boston, Massachusetts, opened its doors.
It is constructed upon the assumption that a group of minds can be marshalled and controlled in growth in exactly the same manner that a military officer marshalls and directs the bodily movements of a company of soldiers.

Age grades were responsible for a variety of activities, from guarding the camp, to cattle herding, to certain rituals and ceremonies.
Such groupings on the basis of age, did not constitute a permanent, paid military in the modern Western sense, nevertheless they did provide a stable basis for sustained armed mobilization, much more so that ad hoc tribal levies or war parties.
In fact Shaka organized the various age grades into regiments, and quartered them in special military kraals, with each regiment having its own distinctive names and insignia.

Maasai age-sets - Traditional Music & Cultures of Kenya
The basic Maasai political and social structure is their rigid system of age-sets (or age grades; strictly-speaking, an age-grade is a stage within the age-set).
They move up through a hierarchy of grades, each lasting approximately 15 years, including those of junior warriors, senior warriors, junior elders (sometimes classed as senior warriors), and senior elders, who are the ones who make decisions affecting the whole tribe.
The exact age and date is determined by elders, who decide when they need a new group of warriors.
