Age of Wonders manages to mix an absorbing plot (rare in the strategy genre), well-paced and entertaining gameplay, and almost limitless replay value into an admirable product that should be greatly considered by all fans of either the RPG or turn-based strategy genre.
Though Age of Wonders draws heavily on J.R.R. Tolkien's work (there's actually a goblin with a Ring of Invisibility in the game), the story is a breath of fresh air from other games that emulate The Lord of the Rings.
Age of Wonders has too many useful features to list here, but some of them include a choice between tactical and automatic combat (though Masters of Magic did have that feature), multiple nonessential Heroes, a relations screen, 12 truly unique races, branching campaigns...

AOW is based in the standard Tolkein-esque fantasy universe, replete with elves, orcs, halflings, humans and a score of other races.
Both groups start on the extreme western shores of the continent and must fight their way to the Valley of Wonders, located far to the east.
At the heart of AOW is its use of heroes.

One of the criticisms aimed at Age of Wonders 2 was the lack of a tutorial which meant gamers new to the series struggled picking up the game, Triumph have listened to the feedback and added a complete tutorial campaign comprising of 3 scenarios which take you through the various aspects of the game.
While gamers familiar with the Age of Wonders series won't find the computer AI much of a challenge in easy mode, on the medium and hard modes the computer is quite challenging and won't make any mistakes.

The world of Age Of Wonders is just one victim of this plague, thrown into chaos by the arrival of humanity in a haven where elves, halflings, faeries, dwarves, and other pointy-eared types used to live in harmony.

Age of Wonders II is still a fantasy-themed turn-based strategy game where you control cities for resources, use those resources to train troops, and then march those troops around the map to conquer your enemies.
Age of Wonders had that problem, as does Heroes of Might and Magic IV to some extent, and so it’s curious that Triumph Studios didn’t even address the issue.
Overall, Age of Wonders II is similar enough to Age of Wonders that I didn’t really like either game for the same reasons (mostly the pacing).

Developer Triumph Studios have not only tweaked a lot of the rules and principles from Age of Wonders, but has crafted a beautiful game that is easier to manage, and yet, quite a challenge for even veteran strategy gamers.
Each race's starting hero is a wizard, not a brawler, and unlike Age of Wonders it's best to keep your wizard locked away in your capital inside the Wizard's Tower instead of personally leading armies on the map.

If I had to describe AOWSM in one sentence I would say that this is a fantasy empire-building game with a simple interface, is fast-paced, and is extremely fun to play (bordering on addiction level).
It builds on the success of its predecessor (Age of Wonders II) yet it adds new features, races, buildings, spells and campaigns to make it a game that stands on its own merit.
