It was unfortunate that the Electoral Commission recently did not recommend that 16 and 17-year olds should enjoy democratic rights that reflect their responsibilities.
In particular, the idea that reducing the voting age would produce a short term fall in voter turnout demonstrates that a range of causes of low electoral turnout need to be tackled.

I feel that if a person between the ages of 18 and 24 was able to make a successful election bid for Congress, winning the necessary support from the electorate, he or she should not be disqualified from holding that office simply because of his or her age.

Had the process stretched over several months instead of a few weeks, the flaws in Kerry’s candidacy would have become obvious and he would have been forced, in the crucible of conflict, to elaborate a more coherent message.

There is a question about whether young people between the ages of 16 and 18 have developed enough life skills to warrant the lowering of the voting age.
Indeed, if the voting age were lowered and candidates failed to engender any interest in the age range concerned, it could have the opposite effect of depressing turnout yet further.
In addition to the possible lack of life skills, the vast majority of young people between the ages of 16 and 21 are furthering their education or building up a career for themselves.
