Calcium channel blocking polypeptide from agelenopsis aperta and therapeutic methods employing it - US Patent 5599559   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
A polypeptide isolated from the venom of the Agelenopsis aperta spider blocks calcium channels in cells of various organisms and is useful in blocking such calcium channels in cells per se, in the treatment of calcium channel-mediated diseases and conditions, and in the control of invertebrate pests.
This invention relates to a polypeptide found in the venom of the Agelenopsis aperta spider and to a polypeptide having substantially the same amino acid sequence and substantially the same activity as said polypeptide.
Venom is obtained from the Agelenopsis aperta spider through the process of milking by electrical stimulation according to standard methods well known to those skilled in the art.

 Susan Riechert Q&A
Agelenopsis aperta, for instance, can detect insect odors and vibrations and will build its webs where these cues are strongest.
Aggression in Agelenopsis aperta involves the combined interaction of two conflicting tendencies: the tendency to flee or run away (for simplicity I call this fear) and the tendency to attack (or aggression).
I have never had an Agelenopsis aperta bite me despite the fact that I hand collect them and do all kinds of nasty things to them like heating them up to look at heat stress and placing paint marks on their abdomens.

Clinical effects of bite from Agelenopsis aperta (American funnel web-spider) are negligable, the venom, however, has yeilded several interesting compounds that have pharmocolocal properties that may prove to be quite useful.
The structure of the neurotoxins from Agelenopsis aperta show strong sequential similarities, primarily in the locations of the cysteine residues, with neurotoxins from Phoneutria nigriventer and Hololena curta [102].
The venom of this genus is contains some of the most potent biologic toxins that produce their effects through destabilization of cell membranes and degranulation of nerve terminals resulting in the release of neurotransmitters [130].

The omega-agatoxins from Agelenopsis aperta are divided into two subtypes of neuronal calcium channel toxins with different structural characteristics and binding specificities.
The diversity of omega-agatoxin is an excellent source for calcium channel study.
Whether or not agatoxin has been synthesized in the laboratory is still unknown.

Other members of the spider family Agelenidae are found within the range of the hobo spider as well, most significantly several species of grass spider, Agelenopsis spp.
Agelenopsis grass spiders are found throughout the North American range of the hobo spider.
The noteable absence of Agelenopsis species in areas with large agrestis populations however, strongly suggests that the grass spiders are in many areas, on the losing end of the competitive race with the hobo spider.

For the Agelenopsis Aperta spider, courtship begins when the male climbs onto a female's web and performs an elaborate mating dance.
Agelenopsis Apertas aren't the only female spiders who occasionally kill and eat their spouses, but they're among the few who do so before they mate.
Doing this guarantees the female a good meal, but it also may ruin her chances of reproducing.

Spider mu-toxins are cysteine-rich polypeptides, which cause irreversible paralysis and repetitive action potentials originating in presynaptic axons or nerve terminals.
