  Gemini Agena Target Vehicle
To provide the Gemini spacecraft with a rendezvous and docking target, Agena D rocket stages were modified with the addition of a docking collar, status panel display, and restart capabilities for the Gemini program.
The Gemini-ATV Status Panel (ASP), was mounted on the forward end of the Target Docking Adapter of the Agena Target Vehicle where it was visible to the astronauts in the Gemini spacecraft during and after the docking maneuver.
Originally, only eight Agena parameters were to be displayed in the Gemini spacecraft; however, the number of parameters increased to the point that the spacecraft no longer had the space or weight capability to accommodate them.

Space Mission Patches - Gemini Index
Originally intended to rendezvous with an Agena target vehicle, that plan was scrapped when the Agena launch failed.
Neither of the primary objectives of the mission were accomplished: the planned docking was foiled by a launch shroud which had not properly separated from the target spacecraft; and the ambitious plan for Cernan's spacewalk proved too difficult to complete.
The crew accomplished a docking with their Agena target on their first orbit, a capability that needed to be proven for Apollo.

 Gemini XI - From www.DickGordon.com
Conrad and Gordon had completed the required rituals and headed toward pad 19 and their spacecraft when they heard that the Atlas (which would launch the Gemini Agena Target Vehicle), only 1,800 meters away, was having a problem with its autopilot.
For the first objective to be met (a first-orbit rendezvous with the Agena) they had to launch the Gemini spacecraft within two seconds of the launch of the Agena.
After five spacecraft maneuvers were made to adjust their orbit, the Agena, whose blinking lights they had been watching in the darkness, flashed into the sunlight over the Pacific and almost blinded them.

 SMC Historical Overview Launch Vehicles
The earliest launch vehicles used by the Air Force were Thor and Atlas missiles modified by the Air Force Ballistic Missile Division and Space Systems Division to serve as space boosters.
The launch vehicles developed by the Ballistic Missile Division and its successors were used not only by the Air Force but also by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, created in 1958.
It is noteworthy that much of this cooperation in developing and using launch vehicles was the result of a carefully considered series of written agreements--initiated in 1959 and expanded during the early 1960s--which made up a National Launch Vehicle Program.
