Powell's Books - Brimstone by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child
As their admirers know, one reason Preston and Child thrillers work is because most feature arguably the most charismatic detective in contemporary fiction: FBI Special Agent Aloysius Pendergast, a wealthy, refined yet ruthless descendant of Holmes who's very much his own character.
In time Agent Pendergast ties Fosco into the killings, as well as a plot to equip the Chinese with devastating weapons and a parallel plot to recover a legendary Stradivarius violin.
Pendergast, as well as other Preston and Child semiregulars, notably rough-hewn former NYPD cop Vincent D'Agosta, Watson to Pendergast's Sherlock, tread nearly every page of this vastly imagined, relentlessly enjoyable thriller.

 Trish Wilson's Blog
Pendergast, whom the writers based on Sherlock Holmes, is a bit of an enigma.
I don't know what it is, although an FBI field office agent in "Still Life With Crows" revealed that it begins with "Al." The same agent also said he couldn't begin to even attempt to pronounce it.
While Aloysius, Alphonse, Alain, or Alistair are obvious possibilities, I have a pet theory.

The most welcome return, however, is that of the enigmatic Special Agent Pendergast, whose appearances in RELIC and RELIQUARY made those books and add immeasurably to this one.
THE CABINET OF CURIOSITIES reveals much --- but by no means all --- about Pendergast's background, and he continues, even at the conclusion, to be one of the more interesting contemporary characters in adventure fiction.
The ultimate marvel in THE CABINET OF CURIOSITIES, however, is that Preston and Child continue to seamlessly weave tales that are at once compelling, spellbinding and addicting.

Word Bomb: The Cabinet of Curiosities
FBI Special Agent Pendergast and the opportunistic journalist Smithback are back in The Cabinet of Curiosities, the new book by best-selling writers Preston and Child.
It also provides a fun, quick read without being completely brain-dead and silly; this book requires some thought to follow Pendergast's investigative procedures (ranging from astral travel to bribing library patrons), as well as to try and guess who is who and what is what.
All in all, The Cabinet of Curiosities succeeds on many levels: it shows what frustrates real academics about the bureaucracy of museums and other public establishments, while also showing a bit about why the many officials are so concerned about funding.

Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child Still Life With Crows Reviewed by Rick Kleffel
Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child first came into my radar with 'Relic', a monster-in-the-museum story that featured FBI Agent Pendergast, a sort of southern gentleman gene splice of Sherlock Holmes and Agent Mulder.
Preston and Child even offer a sly jab at their own writing, since Corrie is reading a cheesy thriller titled 'Beyond the Ice Limit', which of course bears no resemblance to their novel 'The Ice Limit'.
Give Lincoln and Child credit for doing something sort of different here, and for efficiently escalating the terror.
