The Aggie Bonfire was a long-lasting tradition begun in 1909 at Texas AandM University until an accident in 1999 that killed twelve students.
The tallest Bonfire was constructed in 1969 at 109 feet (33 meters), but the maximum height was later capped by the University to 55 feet (16.5 meters).
Bonfire survivor John Comstock was the last living person to be removed from the stack, and spent months in the hospital, following amputation of his left leg and partial paralysis of his right side.

Before the Aggie Bonfire became a symbol of tragedy Thursday, it was a symbol of history and controversy, rivalry and comedy, revelry and lunacy, technology and thievery.
At least, that is the year codified into tradition as the first Aggie Bonfire, part of the practice of building outdoor fires on campus to generate enthusiasm for a variety of sports events.
The bonfire wasn't recognized as an official, "legal" campus event until 1936, when the college supplied axes, saws and trucks for students to reap dead cottonwoods from a grove on the edge of town, according to the book.

Junior marketing major and student Bonfire worker Kerri Ward said the off-campus bonfire is not necessarily a replacement for the Bonfire of the past, but serves the same purpose.
He said that Student Bonfire asks that students who wish to participate show up at the site with a driver license, long pants, boots, preferably steel-toe, and their own pot, which is a military-style helmet, which can be bought at army surplus stores.

This ridiculous notion is usually supported by reference to local developers and ranchers that burn the remains of local woodlands after clearing.

Although as a regular attendee of Bonfire through the 80's and 90's I enjoyed the tradition, I believe we should leave the 20th century tradition in the 20th century because continuing Bonfire in this new millenium will cause considerable harm to the University we care so much for.
This may be labeled "bad bull" and I might be labeled a "two-percenter" and be reminded of the number of directions Highway 6 runs, but I believe one of the things a university should impart to the individuals that attend it is the ability to think for themselves.
The podium yesterday was for remembering what we had lost, not for advocating a position on the future of Aggie Bonfire.

I’m a proud member of the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Class of 1998 and former four-year resident and webmaster of Schuhmacher Hall.
While I was at AandM I built the hell outta Fightin’ Texas Aggie Bonfire and participated in other Aggie traditions such as Muster, Replant and Big Event.
I was even in the Fightin’ Texas Aggie Corps of Cadets (Talon 12) for a while.
