The name is generally to be found spelled as Aghaboe or Aughavoe in literature Saint Canice is the patron saint of this parish because of his connection to the Abbey in Aghaboe.
Aghaboe translates as 'Ox's Field' and it is said to have been good pastureland for cattle, there were some lands near the church of Aghaboe which claimed exemption from tithes and ewes were brought there to yean as a means of avoiding payment of these taxes.
Aghaboe is located at the base of the Slieve Bloom Mountains in Laois, and currently the most well known physical feature of this parish is Grantstown Lake (or Lough) and the Woods associated with it.

The first church on the site of Aghaboe was founded by St. Canice in the 6th Century and became an important religious centre.
During its eventful history, it was plundered in 913, rebuilt in 1052, burnt in 1160, rebuilt in 1234 and burnt again in 1346.
Aghaboe is also known as the birthplace of the geographer St. Fergal who founded Salzburg in Austria.

Canice is reputed to have founded a monastery in the sixth century in nearby Aghaboe, Co Laois.
Aghaboe grew in importance, and in the following century sent out St Feargal (died 784) as a missionary to the church of Salzburg.
At another time when Canice was at his monastery at Aghaboe, Colomba and some companions were at sea when a storm threatened to capsize their little boat.

Commemorated on 11 October, born in 515 or 516, at Glengiven, in what is now County Derry, Ireland; died at Aghaboe in 600.
He was descended from Ui-Dalainn, a Waterford tribe which dwelt on an island now identified as Inis-Doimhle in the Suir.
His Irish foundations were Drumachose, two miles southeast of Limavady, Kilkenny West, in County Westmeath, and the great Abbey of Aghaboe in Ossory, Queens County.

On the occasion of the launch of the history of Aghaboe parish, a National Millennium Committee Project, held on December 19, the community hall in Ballacolla was packed to the rafters.
From a historic perspective the name Aghaboe focuses the mind on the monastic settlement, which is central to the heritage and culture of not only the parish but the diocese of Ossory and right across Europe also with the Salzburg connection as a living example to this day.
Of this ancient fabric at Aghaboe, but the chancel now remains, which serves for the parish church; the east and south windows are pointed and seem to have been modernised.

Fergal trained at the monastery in Aghaboe in the eighth century and went from there to the continent.
Canice founded a monastery at Aghaboe about 577 AD and it was there that St. Fergal trained.
Aghaboe was not an isolated spot as it stood close to the Great Pass of Ossory, part of the road linking the east with the southwest.

At the same time the see was transferred from Seir-Kieran to Aghaboe (see CANICE, SAINT), but at the end of the twelfth century it was transferred to Kilkenny, where it has since remained.

Vergilius (or Virgilius, in Irish Fergal, Ferghil, or Feirghil) is said to have been a descendant of Niall of the Nine Hostages.
In the "Annals of the Four Masters" and the "Annals of Ulster" he is mentioned as Abbot of Aghaboe, in Queen's County.
About 745 he left Ireland, intending to visit the Holy land, but, like many of his countrymen, who seemed to have adopted this practice as a work of piety, he settled down in France, where he was received with great favour by Pepin, then mayor of the Palace under Childeric III.

On a slight rise above and adjacent to the ancient Aghaboe remains, stands a 17th century Georgian home, known as the Aghaboe House, with its commanding view over the boglands west and north to the Slieve Blooms and green pastures all around.
With all its outbuildings, at the time of British occupation and Ireland's great famine, this Aghaboe estate was the center of a large beef cattle operation.
William Joseph Fitzpatrick left Aghaboe during the Great Famine, made his way to Liverpool and boarded a ship named the Lebanon and arrived in New York City in 1848.

The transfer of the Cathedral from Aghaboe to Kilkenny in the last decade of the twelfth century, the foundation of a cathedral chapter and the establishment of a parish system through the system of tithes introduced by the Anglo-Normans radically transformed the ecclesiastical organization of the diocese.
More than half of the new parishes were in the hands of the religious, while the rest were run by the secular clergy - mostly the dean and chapter of St. Canice's.
Because of their importance in the diocese the suppression of the monasteries in the wake of the reformation led to enormous changes.

Fergal, or St. Virgilius as he is known in Austria was the Abbott at Aghaboe Monastic settlement in the 8th century.
This connection was lost until 1974 when a group of Austrians from Salzburg visited Aghaboe to celebrate the 1200th anniversary of the founding of the cathedral.
Paul Liefer expressed a wish to visit Aghaboe it was decided to also invite him to unveil the new plaque at St. Fergal's.

Aghaboe, a parish, in the baronies of Clandonagh and Clarmallagh (was UPPER OSSORY), QUEEN'S county, and province of a LEINSTER, on the road from Dublin to Roscrea (Co. Tipperary); containing, with the post-town of Burros-in-Ossory, 6196 inhabitants.
This see continued, under a succession of bishops, to retain its episcopal distinction till near the close of the 12th century when Felix O'Dullany, the last bishop was compelled by the submission, of Donchad, Prince of Ossory to Hen, II., to remove the seat of his diocese to Kilkenny.

Bishop and patron of Cork, born near Bandon, about 550, died at Cloyne, 25 September, 623, was son of Amergin.
He evangelized Gowran, Coolcashin, and Aghaboe, and founded a school at Eirce.
For some years he dwelt in a hermitage at Gougane Barra, where a beautiful replica of Cormac's chapel has recently been erected in his honour.

Pat Keashan said it was very historic in that, 12 hundred years ago St Fergal had set out from Aghaboe and set up a cathedral in Salzburg, where he became a bishop.
With the visits of people from Salzburg to Aghaboe a local committee was set up to upgrade the monastery area there and that was an important step.
It was, he wrote, a further chapter in the history between Aghaboe and Salzburg.

Prior to his death in 1202, it was the vision of Bishop Felix O'Deleaney that the monastic settlement that was St Canice's should house a cathedral church.
Since the 1120's the see of Ossory had been shifted from Aghaboe to Kilkenny but no new building was erected to mark the move.
The bishop was one of the few who realised the significance of the Norman settlement of the region.
