Rebel Gaa News - Cork by birth, Aghabullogue by the grace of God!
Aghabullogue brought the first all Ireland hurling title to Cork in 1890 and up until twenty five years ago hurling was the only game that was played at adult level in the villages of Rylane, Aghabullogue and Coachford.
Aghabullogue took the decision to enter a junior team in the Mid Cork Championship in 1979 and we haven’t looked back since.
Aghabullogue junior Footballers had never reached a Mid Cork Final before this year and although we had come close in previous years, this holy grail of Muskerry football continued to be our goal year after year.

For Aghabullogue, reaching the final was monumental as the small parish broke away from its hurling stronghold status to show that their footballers can copy the success of their hurlers.
Aghabullogue nearly had their dream start when Barry Kiely raced through towards the Finuge goal within the opening minute but with only the keeper to beat Kiely dragged his shot agonisingly wide.
Unlike the early goal chance Aghabullogue squandered in the opening period they made no mistake in the second half with a wonder strike from Paul O’Rourke when he found the top righthand corner from 30 metres and the second coming was on.

John Downey and John Hurley did their best to stem the Aghabullogue tide but the concession of two frees was to prove costly for Blarney in the final minutes and Dan Twomey's unerring accuracy from placed balls did the rest.

But then Niall Buckley took a quick free in his own half, the ball was played across the face of the Courceys square to Foley who first timed the sliothar to the back of the net to give his side a dramatic victory.
Courceys did have a goal chance in the 10th minute but Aghabullogue keeper Donal Casey saved superbly from Niall Murphy’s penalty effort and the Rovers had to wait until the 16th minute for their opening score, and Casey will have to shoulder some of the responsibility for it.
However, Aghabullogue refused to give up the chase and inspired by the brilliance of full back Richard Tarrant and centreback Niall Buckley, and the silken skills of Peter Kelleher, they hit back with a vengeance, and Finbarr Foley’s accuracy from frees had the deficit down to the minimum with seven minutes to go.

If the city side were unhappy with the prospect of a second outing against Aghabullogue they took full vengeance, leading 2-14 to 0-2 at the break.

A goal from a penalty in the 14th minute gave the opposition a lead at the break of 1-7 to 0-7 and there wasn't much between the sides with Pio Condon and David Collins starring in a solid defensive performance.
