Cynic (band) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Cynic was a progressive/technical death metal band from Miami, Florida, USA that was founded in 1987 and dissolved in 1994.
With the arrival of bassist Tony Choy, the band began recording their first demos, which, for the most part, contained the prevalent death metal/thrash tendencies typical of the Florida scene.
Besides the band's unquestionable technical prowess, the album also displayed their awesome talent for improvisation and inventive songwriting.

Aghora are no depressive, frustrated, baggy-pants metal brat pack, nor some violently thrashing death troupe; they have both a positive outlook and a wide-ranging musical scope.
Aghora also have the talents of Sean Malone and Sean Reinert (Gordian Knot and ex-Cynic bassist and drummer respectively) filling their rhythm section, and a female vocalist, Danishta Riviera, on vocal duties.
Aghora is spawned out of the lack of a scene and out of every artist that has inspired us.

Much like Cynic, Aghora has every chance to show off amazing technical proficiency, but also manage to create memorable compositions with well-placed soloing (which is not limited to the guitar) and breakdowns.
There is also no dearth of experimentation here as Aghora implement a great deal of electronics into their music, as well as the Tabla and Sitar for an authentic sound (keep reading...) which builds on Cynic's use of keyboards on their album.
Rivero is a true asset to the band, not simply for her singing talents, but also for her vocal arrangements, which add to the continuity of the songs greatly.

I really have only heard one band that has adopted such a broad base of styles, Aghora, which is a great cd, but I'd have to say Arabesque has much more of a band feel to them, and the vocals are much more varied, where as Aghora's vocals were somewhat the same throughout the cd.
To compare the two bands is really not fair to either one, both are outstanding in their own right, my reference to Aghora is only in general terms (prog/fusion/female singers, great musicianship, etc), if you know of Aghora, this is but a small reference, but fans of one will definetly like the other.
The performance of the band is outstanding, the vocals are great with some nice chorus and even a sample here and there is used to make it a special mix of Prog-metal.

It was only a matter of time before the members of the late great Cynic got involved in new bands, and Aghora is one such band, featuring the Cynic rhythm section of Sean Reinert and Sean Malone, though the band was founded by guitarist Santiago Dobles.
Aghora, the album, is an intriguing fusion/metal/rock album, featuring smooth melodic vocals from Danishta Rivero, excellent guitarwork from two guitarists with differing backgrounds (one, Dobles, seems more jazz/fusion-based, the other, Charlie Ekendahl, metal-based), and exactly the masterful rhythm section work that one would expect from the Cynic Seans.
There is quite a bit of variety here, the band is quite willing to explore different moods and styles.
