Its modern name comes from the chrurch of Agia Roumeli, which is built on the older, roman temple of Agia Roumilia or Roumina.
During the summer months, lots of visitors come to Agia Roumeli, since the village is located at a distance of 1.5 km.
From Agia Roumeli and at a walking distance of about an hour you will find the small byzantine church where it is said that the Apostle Paul came to teach.

From Agios Pavlos it is a 1 hour 15 minute walk to Agia Roumeli, on a well-marked path, often on the beach.

 Getting to Agia Roumeli
The journey time between Agia Roumeli and Hora Sfakion is about one hour and is slightly longer between Paleohora and Agia Roumeli.
As you will not need a car in Agia Roumeli there is little point in renting one to get to the ferry departure point.
There are other ways to reach Agia Roumeli on foot, from Sougia and across the mountains from Omalos via Katsaromoura but these are best left to very experienced fit hikers with good local knowledge.

The gorge of Samaria is 16 km long (this refers to the distance between the settlement of Omalos and the village of Agia Roumeli), starting at an altitude of 1250m and taking you all the way down to the shores of the Libyan sea in Agia Roumeli.
Once in Agia Roumeli you take one of the boats returning to Hora Sfakion (or Sougia and Paleohora if you prefer although there is no connecting bus to Hania) and take an evening KTEL bus back to Hania.
During the winter Agia Roumeli is not accessible through the gorge because there is far too much water in the river.

The ruins of ancient Tarrha, which flourished chiefly in the Roman period, are at the site of the present day village of Ayia Roumeli, on the coast where the famous Samaria Gorge comes out at the sea.
An interesting feature of ancient Tarrha was the existence either there or at some place nearby of a glass﷓making industry; this at least was the interpretation given by the excavator to the large quantity of burnt glass found in the area.
