As an architect he supplied in 1336 the plans for the present Ponte Vecchio, and those for the original (not the present) Ponte S. Trinita; in 1337 he was engaged on the church of Or San Michele; and he carried on after Giottos death the work of the unrivalled Campanile.
AGNOLO GADDI, born in Florence, was the son of Taddeo; the date of his birth has been given as 1326, but possibly 1350 is nearer the mark.
Agnolo composed his subjects better than Taddeo; he had more dignity and individuality in the figures, and was a clear and bold colorist; the general effect is laudably decorative, but the drawing is poor, and the works show best from a distance.

son and pupil of Taddeo Gaddi, who was himself the major pupil of the Florentine master Giotto.
In these frescoes Agnolo sacrificed expression for design, and his overall concern with optical unification of the composition replaces Giotto's concentration on figures, thereby revealing the new approach toward painting of the International Gothic style.
Between 1383 and 1386 Agnolo designed medallions representing the virtues for the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence, and between 1387 and 1395 his name appears as the designer or gilder of statues for the facade of the Cathedral of Florence.

CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Agnolo, Giovanni, and Taddeo Gaddi
The father died in 1366, Giovanni in 1383, Agnolo in 1396, and all three are buried in Santa Croce in Florence.
Taddeo was the godson of Giotto, lived with him twenty-four years, and became the most eminent of his numerous scholars.
Giovanni Gaddi, the brother and pupil of Agnolo, was a man of much less importance, and hardly any works now remain which can be attributed to him with certainty, as in the rebuilding of San Spirito at Florence most of his work was destroyed.

The frescos in the interior of the apse have never undergone the process of whitewashing, and are the undoubted work of Agnolo Gaddi, the son of Taddeo, and the pupil of Giovanni da Milano and of Jacopo da Casentino: they were executed at the expense of Jacopo degli Alberti.
In this last fresco there is a portrait of the painter, Agnolo Gaddi, at the right-hand corner; he wears a red hood, and has a small beard, according to the fashion of his time.
Agnolo crowds his space with too many figures, but there is a certain dignity in all of them; the colour is clear and bright, and he gives animation and interest to the story.

 Florence Cathedral 11
The introduction of the typology in Italy dates to the "French style group" of windows of the Assisi Upper Basilica (about 1270) and to those in the group made by the Maestro of St. Francis – again in the upper church – deriving from the previous ones.
Through those examples the more and more gothic process both of the image and the three-dimensional space can be noticed, that is, a process where the elements become "concrete" in order to make them comparable with the real contemporary architecture models.
Agnolo Gaddi can be placed in that school, where the search for plasticity almost culturally acquired, coming from Giotto, merges in with the updated trends of the International Gothic and with a firmer search for formal and colouristic decorativism.

Through both his brother Giovanni and his father, Agnolo was heir to the Giottesque tradition and to a successful family enterprise, which he directed with enormous success up to the turn of the 15th century.
Logical or likely though it may be, the notion that this early activity developed out of his brother Giovanni’s still little-known art is hypothetical.
Whereas the works grouped around Giovanni’s name are all small panels, Agnolo was an artist who, like his father, excelled in wall painting.
