Stadion. Who is Stadion? What is Stadion? Where is Stadion? Definition of Stadion. Meaning of Stadion.
At the Olympic Games, the stadion (the actual building) was big enough for twenty competitors, and the race was a 200-yard (about 180-meter) sprint.
The race began with a trumpet blow, but there were officials (agonothetes) at the starting blocks to make sure there were no false starts.
There were also officials at the end to decide on a winner and to make sure no one had cheated (if the officials decided there was a tie, the race would be re-run).

The phrase "Isthmia and Caesarea held in Corinth" is used on a statue base honoring the chariot victory of a certain Herakleitos from Samos.
The two sets of contests were certainly related, because they were presided over by the same agonothetes and the Isthmia usually preceded the Caesarea.
It was set up by a certain Regulus to honor his father who was an agonothetes of the Isthmia and Caesarea and of the Caesarea Sebastea, a set of games dedicated to the ruling emperor.

Alan Cameron suggested that, at least by the sixth century, the old sense of the word, as indicating that the man concerned had paid for games or public performances, had been lost, and that the term simply indicated the man who presided.
While this may make sense in the context of Constantinople, the emphasis on the function of agonothete in the two inscriptions at Aphrodisias suggests more active involvement.

Later, an official called an agonothetes ("public official [-thetes] in charge of dramatic contests [agono-]") oversaw the distribution of municipal funds for the presentation of plays at various festivals sponsoring dramatic competitions.
So like many others in their age, theatre people were now dependent on government financing.
