Agostino Carlini (1718?-August 1790) was an Italian-born sculptor (born in Genoa) who settled in England.
Also in 1775, Carlini was commissioned by Dr William Hunter, first Professor of Anatomy at the Royal Academy schools, to make a cast of the flayed corpse of a recently executed smuggler.
The figure was posed as a Roman statue, the "Dying Gaul", and given the pseudo-classical title "Smugglerius".

The walls are lined with paintings, including early diploma works and works by Reynolds: a self-portrait (just above the Laocoon), and coronation portraits of George III (back wall, below the drape) and Queen Charlotte painted in 1779.
George III was the Academy’s first patron, and is also depicted here in a portrait bust by Agostino Carlini (above Mary Moser).
He achieved early success, exhibiting at the Royal Academy for the first time while still a student there, and winning a gold medal for a painting while only 22 years old.

Perhaps the finest piece of art in the Abbey is the amazingly detailed sculpture on the Damer Monument.
It was designed by Robert Adam and carved by Agostino Carlini in 1775.
The effigies are of Joseph Damer, who built the mansion, mourning his wife, Lady Caroline.

Hunter considered the musculature of the body so remarkable that he had it brought directly to the Academy.
The body was flayed and then placed in the attitude of the Dying Gladiator before being cast by Agostino Carlini RA.
As well as these many practical purposes, the Royal Academy’s cast collection also had an ideological function in promoting the high ideals of the Academy and elevating its status as a learned institution.

 Edward Smyth (1743-1823) - Biographies [Archeire, Irish Architecture Online]
He was apprenticed to the sculptor Simon Vierpyl and subsequently by Hugh Darley the builder.
Darley recommended him to James Gandon who cancelled work from Agostino Carlini and Thomas Banks in London.
As a result Smyth carved many of the figures and riverine heads of the Custom House including Plenty and Industry, Commerce and the figures in the pedimented south front.

Following his arrival in London in 1773, Ceracchi worked for Agostino Carlini and modelled architectural ornament for Robert Adam (i).
The portrait is based on Roman busts of Emperor Caracalla.
In 1778 Ceracchi also worked with Agostino Carlini on the sculptural decoration of Somerset House, London, producing figures of Temperance and Fortitude in Portland stone for the Strand façade.

He subsequently became the second Keeper of the Royal Academy in 1783, a position he retained until his death, when he was succeeded by Wilton.
