Agostino Depretis - Encyclopedia.com   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
For many, however, Depretis was an uninspired, opportunistic leader who governed by avoiding problems rather than resolving them and by sometimes corrupt political manipulation.
To an important degree, the disillusionment with politics among the elite and the cynicism and antiparliamentarianism that characterized later decades in Italy originated during Depretis's period of ascendancy.
Parliament under the now ailing and lack-lustre prime minister, Agostino Depretis (during his second term in 1881-87), appeared weak, corrupt and incapable.

Agostino Depretis (January 31, 1813 - July 29, 1887), Italian statesman, was born at Mezzana Corte near Stradella.
His apologists contend, however, that, as an inexperienced civilian, he could not have made sudden changes in naval arrangements without disorganizing the fleet, and that in view of the impending hostilities he was obliged to accept the dispositions of his predecessors.
Upon the death of Rattazzi in 1873, Depretis became leader of the Left, prepared the advent of his party to power, and was called upon to form the first cabinet of the Left in 1876.

 Agostino Agazzari
Agostino Agazzari (December 2, 1578 - April 10, 1640) was an Italian composer and music theorist.
His madrigals, on the other hand, are a cappella, in the late Renaissance style, so Agazzari simultaneously showed extreme progressive tendencies as well as some more conservative: unusually, his progressive music was sacred, and his conservative was secular, a situation almost unique among composers of the early Baroque.

 History Of Italy
Under the premiership of Agostino Depretis (1813-1887), Italian politics became dominated by a process of political bartering referred to as trasformismo, by which the political allegiance of interest groups was secured by political rewards and concessions irrespective of party affiliation.
Depretis' government introduced compulsory elementary education in 1877 but, in response to conspiracies by anarchists and others, also took measures to limit civil and constitutional liberties.
Depretis died in 1887 and was replaced by Crispi, the first Southerner to become prime minister and one of the most important figures in the history of the liberal state.
