Agouti - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Agouti refers to a number of species of rodents, as well as a number of genes affecting coat coloration in several different animals.
The term agouti refers to animals with banded, or brindled, fur — each individual guard hair is not one solid color but instead has "stripes" of (usually) fl, brown and white producing an animal which is not a solid color but appears speckled or brindled.
The agouti gene is responsible for the bay coloring of horses.

Agoutis are forest dwellers; they eat fruits, leaves, roots, nuts, and sugarcane.
Agouti is occasionally used instead of Cuniculus as the generic name of the related paca, or spotted cavy.
Agoutis are classified in the phylum Chordata, subphylum Vertebrata, class Mammalia, order Rodentia, family Dasyproctidae.

Nutrition Reviews: Agouti/melanocortin interactions with leptin pathways in obesity   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Agouti antagonism of central nervous system (CNS) MCR binding inhibits the anorexic effects of leptin, whereas agouti up-regulates adipocyte leptin expression, serving to limit the magnitude of agouti-induced obesity.
Agouti was the first obesity gene cloned,9 and in the ensuing 6 years, both central and peripheral mechanisms of agouti action have been extensively studied.
The cloning and characterization of agouti,9 together with the demonstration that agouti modulation of pigmentation is mediated via antagonism of MC 1-R,9" have led to the hypothesis that this antagonism may serve as a paradigm to understand the metabolic effects of agouti in other tissues.

Diabetes: Agouti expression in human adipose tissue: func... @ HighBeam Research   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Given that agouti is expressed in human adipose tissue and that the ectopic expression of agouti in adipose tissue results in moderately obese mice, the link between agouti expression in human adipose tissue and obesity/type 2 diabetes was investigated.
The presence of agouti, and MCRs, in human adipose tissue raises questions as to their normal function in adipose tissue and whether dysregulation of agouti in adipose tissue might be associated with an obese, insulin-resistant, or diabetic phenotype.
Having established the presence of both agouti and MCRs in human adipose tissue, agouti expression levels were measured in patients with a wide range in BMI and in patients with type 2 diabetes.

Most agouti species are defined by their geographic location rather than their appearance, which makes life rather difficult for scientists.
Agoutis thrive in a wide range of habitats, from old growth rainforest to disturbed areas and even fields, gardens and plantations.
Around villages and towns, the agouti is a favorite prey for hunters and so may become scarce near inhabited areas.
