The molar teeth have cylindrical crowns, with several islands and a single lateral fold of enamel.
The paca genus is sometimes placed in an own family Agoutidae.
Note that the animals commonly known as agoutis are not the same as those with the scientifical name Agouti (the pacas).

The agouti resembles a giant guinea pig, being short-tailed and rather round of body, a little bigger than a rabbit.
It is a type of rodent, classified in the its own family, Agoutidae.
Their taxonomy is poorly known, and most are put in the same genus, Dasyprocta.

 Aspidoderidae
At least 10 species (all Lauroia species, 5 species of Aspidodera, and Ansiruptodera ansirupta) have been only collected from Dasypodidae (Armadillos).
The rest of the species have been recorded on cavi-like rodents (Caviidae, Ctenomydae, Agoutidae), Didelphiomorphs (opossums), Cricetidae rodents (Scapteromyini, Oryzomyini, and Akodontini), Felidae (Felis wiedii) and Myrmecophagidae (the cute anteaters!).
All the hosts (but the cat) are fossorial or semi-fossorial insectivorous animals (see McNab, 1984).
