This area is of major agricultural interest since the soil and climatic conditions are almost excellent for a variety of crops, although bad soil management and excessive use of fertilisers have caused problems to some soils of the area.
The ability of the system, to evaluate each soil unit for alternative crops, helps agricultural decision makers in suggesting changes to land uses, in the case that the agricultural management practice (use of fertilizers and pesticides) has caused damage to the environment.

Pavlostathis earned his Diploma in Agricultural Engineering from the Agricultural University of Athens, Greece and his MS and Ph.D. degrees in Environmental Engineering from Cornell University.
Pavlostathis research expertise includes environmental biotechnology and bioprocesses for the bioremediation of contaminated natural systems, the treatment of industrial wastewater, as well as the treatment and utilization of food and agricultural waste and by-products.
His recent work has focused on the bioavailability and biotransformation of recalcitrant organic compounds in contaminated natural systems, the biological decolorization and biotransformation of textile dyes, the kinetics and modeling of reductive biotransformation and anaerobic treatment processes, as well as the development of halophilic and thermophilic biological processes.
