 History
On August 14, 1876, the Texas Legislature established the "Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas for Colored Youths" and placed responsibility for its management with the Board of Directors of the Agricultural and Mechanical College at Bryan.
The four-year senior college program began in 1919 and in 1937, a division of graduate studies was added, offering master's degrees in agricultural economics, rural education, agricultural education, school administration and supervision, and rural sociology.
In 1981, the Texas Legislature acknowledged the University's rich tradition of service and identified various statewide needs which the University should address including the assistance of students of diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds to realize their full potential, and assistance of small and medium-sized communities and businesses in their growth and development.

As members of the Texas AandM community we are unquestionably circuitous beneficiaries of Justin Smith Morrill, but we are also direct legatees of the African American lawmakers, and especially their leader, Matthew Gaines, who served in the 12th Texas Legislature.

The Blackland Experiment Station, Substation No. 5, was authorized by the Texas Legislature in 1909 and was established at Temple to conduct research on varied soil and crop problems, with special attention to the control of cotton root rot.
Mechanization for all major crops, especially cotton, has been a research activity on the Blackland Station during the past 10 years.
Most of the research is conducted in cooperation with the Soil and Water Conservation Division of the Agricultural Research Service, USDA, and with other substations and departments of the ARM College of Texas.

At The Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas, he worked on the staff of the student newspaper, serving as editor in his senior year, and he participated in a student strike of several weeks duration against the policies of the college president.
While he was in college, Brannin's family moved to Dallas, and in order to be near his family, he accepted an apprenticeship at the Dallas Cotton Mills--$l.75 for an 11-hour day, six days a week.
At the college, Brannin gave lectures on current events, taught a workers' correspondence course, and served as director of the school's Open Forum, and later as director of the college itself.

Oceanography at Texas AandM University officially dates from 8 January 1949, when the Board of Directors of the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas established the Department of Oceanography and Meteorology, one of the first such academic programs in the United States.
As a broader response to expansion and growth, the name of the institution was changed in 1963 to Texas AandM University, and the first steps were taken to establish coeducation in place of the formerly all-male student body with compulsory military training.
As a result of these farsighted changes, Texas AandM today is a multi-faceted university with a student body numbering approximately 42,000, of whom about half are women.
