Researchers from the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station, Texas Tech University and the University of Texas have identified potential natural threats to imported fire ants and are further investigating to see if they will be feasible in controlling fire ants in Texas.
Texas Department of Agriculture inspectors, along with researchers from Texas AandM, Texas Tech, and the University of Texas, have conducted imported fire ant surveys in counties that border counties quarantined for imported fire ants.
Researchers at the University of Texas are studying the chemical signals (pheromones) that are produced by queens -- one that attracts workers to the queen and one that inhibits young queens from reproducing in the colony.

Searching for bacteriophage was the task of Dr. George Di Giovanni, Texas Agricultural Experiment Station environmental microbiologist in El Paso, in a study of wastewater used to irrigated a spinach crop in the Experiment Station's greenhouse.
The study was funded by the Texas Department of Agriculture, U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Experiment Station.
Assadian and Di Giovanni collaborated on the project with Dr. Jaime Iglesias, Texas Cooperative Extension agent in El Paso County; Dr. Juan Enciso, Experiment Station agriculture engineer in Weslaco; and Dr. William Lindemann, New Mexico State University agronomist.

 Kiss mistletoe goodbye this season for better tree health
Dr. Todd Watson, urban forest researcher at the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station, points to mistletoe growing on a tree on the Texas A&M University campus.
Watson said the trials were looking for at least 90 percent control in the 25 mistletoe plants treated in each group to be considered successful.
Watson completed the first year of a two-year study aimed at eliminating the pest from urban landscapes and found promising results with at least one new treatment -- a plant hormone.

The Laboratory was established in 1938 by the USDA Soil Conservation Service and the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station to address wind erosion problems in the Southern Great Plains.
