The Early East Slavs constituted the bulk of the population in Western Russia from the 7th century onwards and slowly assimilated the native Finno-Ugric tribes, such as the Merya, the Muromians and the Meshchera.
Russia saw its comparatively developed centrally planned economy contract severely for five years, as the executive and the legislature dithered over the implementation of reforms and Russia's aging industrial base faced a serious decline.
Population is densest in the European part of Russia, in the Ural Mountains area, and in the south-western parts of Siberia; the south-eastern part of Siberia that meets the Pacific Ocean, known as the Russian Far East, is sparsely populated, with its southern part being densest.

The Varangians/Russes got to Russia through their technology, the sailing ships that could actually take them to Greenland; but they came to rule the area through forms of large scale political organization that may have been rudimentary compared to Francia and Romania, but were beyond anything seen previously east of Moravia.
Russia would then always be hindered by autocratic government that alternatively smothered dissent and innovation and then, alarmed at the backwardness of the country, attempted to impose top-down reforms and development -- which then would be resisted by a national conservatism that the government in its phase of being threatened by change would have loved.
Russia was as weary of war as a country could be, but the Provisional Government decided to stay in the war against Germany.

The peasant who chose to settle on the land of a manorial lord got the grant of a homestead in addition to that of land, and this was the origin of a sort of house-rent called the projivnoe, which as a rule amounted yearly to the fourth part of the value of the homestead.

California's mountain ranges influence the climate as well: moisture-laden air from the west cools as it ascends the mountains, dropping moisture; some of the rainiest parts of the state are west-facing mountain slopes.
In this period, some nobles of Imperial Russia made brief attempts to explore and claim parts of California, particularly at Fort Ross, but these were limited by a lack of Imperial interest.
California was poorly settled until modern public health eliminated the endemic outbreaks of yellow fever, malaria and plague, caused from the area’s lack of frosts, which kills mosquitoes and fleas.

Von Gestner requested extensive concessions for his work, including a twenty- year monopoly on railway-building in Russia, the creation of a stock company which would be ceded land for inns on a strip a mile wide bordering the lines, and land for factories four miles wide.
Although he advertised for both rails and undercarriages to be made in Russia, no manufacturers were set up to build the quantities he needed in the short time frame he allowed, and so von Gerstner was forced to buy it all from foreign manufacturers.

H-Net Review: Theodore R. Weeks on Imperial Russia: New Histories for the Empire
In a similar vein, Steven Hoch in his essay "The Serf Economy, the Peasant Family, and the Social Order," insists that such long-maligned institutions of the Russian agricultural economy as the peasant commune and "peasant patriarchy" were in fact reasonable responses to a harsh and unpredictable climate.
Hoch argues that agricultural output in Russia was in fact higher and the rate of poverty and famine in Russia lower than generally presumed.
At the end of the essay one is left, however, with the nagging question: if agriculture in Russia was indeed in relatively good health, then why did the "land question" and perceptions of peasant poverty play such a great role in Russian political and social thought in the second half of the nineteenth century?
