Topic: Agron (dictionary)

  Agron
A youth in Greek mythology, Agron and his two sisters were from Cos, a Mediterranean island.
They refused to respect any gods but Gaia and were turned into birds for their sin.
It is a double dictionary, the two parts being arranged according to the alphabetic order of initials and of final letters respectively, and was intended to be used in versification, in which acrostics and rime were the chief requisites.

When the Aetolians attempted to compel the Me-dionians to join their confederacy, Agron undertook to protect them, having been induced to dc so by a large bribe which he received from Demetrius, the father of Philip.
Agron, overjoyed at the news of this success, gave himself up to feasting, and, in consequence of his excess, contracted a pleurisy, of which he died.

At age 20 Saadia completed his first great work, the Hebrew dictionary which he entitled "Agron." At 23 he composed a polemic against Anan ben David, thus beginning the activity which was to prove important in opposition to Karaism, in defense of traditional Judaism.
Here, too, he was the first; his grammatical work, now lost, gave an inspiration to further studies, which attained their most brilliant and lasting results in Spain, and he created in part the categories and rules along whose lines was developed the grammatical study of the Hebrew language.
His dictionary, primitive and merely practical as it was, became the foundation of Hebrew lexicography; and the name "Agron" (literally, "collection"), which he chose and doubtless created, was long used as a designation for Hebrew lexicons, especially by the Karaites.

Atys 3 is also said to have been the son of Cotys 2 and Halie 2, daughter of Tyllus, an autochthon; but in any case it was Atys 3, considered to be a descendant of Heracles 1 and Omphale, who succeeded his father Manes in the throne.
Agron 2 was the son of the Assyrian queen Semiramis, who lived about 810 BC and turned, at her death, into a white dove, which is quite natural, given that her mother Dercetis 1, a Babylonian, had changed into a fish.

Origin, History and Uses of Oats and Wheat
Oat straw has been an important bedding for livestock through history.
In Samuel Johnson's dictionary, oats were defined as "eaten by people in Scotland, but fit only for horses in England." The Scotsman's retort to this is, "That's why England has such good horses, and Scotland has such fine men!"
In the United States, oats were formerly grown mainly for horse feed; but with the coming of the motorized age, oats became a feed chiefly for young stock and poultry.
