Brazil - Brasil - BRAZZIL - Composer Guinga Gets the Spotlight - Brazilian Music - November 2001
In consequence, Guinga's third album, Cheio de Dedos (1996), was almost entirely instrumental—a conscious effort to appeal to international audiences, as well as to allow his compositions to speak for themselves without the added interpretation of lyrics.
"Ária de Opereta" is the second vocal; a waltz whose lyrics talk of operas and whose melody recalls Tom Jobim turned on his ear, with string arrangement by Leandro Braga.
But even before the release of Cheio de Dedos, Guinga broke into mainstream Brazilian music through Leila Pinheiro's Catavento e Girassol, a critical and commercial success that extricated the singer from her bossa novista image and turned the composer into a living legend.

However, in 1870, nobody in Rio de Janeiro realized that they were witnessing the birth of an entirely new style; that would come later.
In the meantime, musicians were free to experiment, to develop a whole new way of playing and composing, and they did it with alacrity and considerable joie de vivre.
The most popular singers of the era could be heard on live radio broadcasts with groups of choro musicians (known as regionais) as accompanists -- some of the most important young chorões earned their living by playing in these ensembles.

One of the best examples of the union between jazz and choro can be found in the works of maestro and arranger Severino Araújo (from Pernambuco, NE), who decided to adapt sambas and choros to the big band structure soon after moving to Rio in 1944.
Rio de Janeiro is the definitive capital of choro, but not because musicians would lack brilliancy in other parts of the country, although all of them would have to head to Rio sooner or later.
