Fontaneda biscuit factory faced with closure
In April 2002, the Fontaneda biscuit factory in Aguilar de Campoo (Castilla-León, Spain) was threatened with closure by its owner, the multinational United Biscuits.
The announcement met with fierce protests from the workforce and the inhabitants of Aguilar de Campoo, and the closure was suspended pending negotiations between management and the plant's workers' committee.
The Aguilar de Campoo workers' committee, which had not been consulted on the closure, rejected it and accused the regional government of a lack of responsibility for not opposing a measure which is within its realm of competence.

Madrid: Spanish workers at a biscuit factory earmarked for closure were holding hostage six managers and lawyers, in the hope of forcing a change of heart by the owners, the United Biscuit Group.
Police have not intervened, and workers met the national government's representative in the region on Sunday night to try to resolve the situation without the use of police, a member of the plant's workers committee, Hilario Alvarez, said.
The town council supports the workers, saying that many of Aguilar's 3000 residents depend on the factory for their livelihood.
