In April 1988 EHI was awarded a contract to define an EH 101 to meet the specification of the New Shipborne Aircraft (NSA) programme.
The airframe of the EH 101 is mostly conventional aluminium alloy construction with some composite materials in the rear fuselage and tail section.
The EH 101 has again been submitted for consideration, but there are claims that the requirement has been rewritten to make it much harder for the EH 101 to win.

The 2,270 shp Mk250, the fifth derivative of the versatile RTM 322 family, has been developed to power military export versions of the AgustaWestland EH 101, and corresponds to the RTM 322-02/8 variant already in operation with the Royal Air Force EH 101 Merlin HC Mk.3 support helicopter.
The RTM 322 has been selected for 75 per cent of EH 101 orders, and was recently selected by the Japan Defense Agency for a 14 aircraft program.

The 101, otherwise known as the AgustaWestland EH 101, is a relatively mature design, with about 100 orders and a solid if unspectacular future.
The 101 folks have a bigger cabin, a lot more flight hours, and more engine power.
While Sikorsky has a lot of experience as an airframer, Lockheed Martin is handling 101 integration, and they have much relevant experience in that department.
