Lucius Domitius Ahenobarbus - Nero Claudius Caesar
12/15/37 A.D. Nero was the son of Agripinilla and Domitius, (Gnaeus Domitius Ahenobarbus,) her first husband.
The death of Claudius in 54 A.D., generally thought to have been planned and carried out by his wife Agripinilla, secured for her son Lucius Domitius Ahenobarbus the place as emperor which she had so carefully arranged.
Before his death, Claudius, though he already had a son Britannicus, had adopted Lucius, who changed his name to Nero Claudius Caesar, (a great-great-grandson of Augustus) at Agripinilla's instigation; instrumental too in the transfer of power was the influence of Seneca, Nero's tutor, and of Sextus Afranius Burrus, the praetorian prefect.

The Domitius Ahenobarbus family was a Patrician family whose members achieved notoriety and success in the years of the Republic and the Empire.
One of their earliest victories was in the battle of Lake Regillus over the Latins in 494 BC, where their victory was promised by the gods, Castor and Pollux, and a sign was given to them by changing the beard of their victor to red, which consequently made Ahenobarbus part of their lineage.
The many political successes in the Ahenobarbus family were due to the easibility of the men to switch sides when it suited them.

Nero   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-17)
Claudius Nero Caesar, born Lucius Domitius Ahenobarbus, Roman Emperor (from 54 AD to 68 AD) - great-great-grandson of Augustus and step-brother to Britannicus.
Ahenobarbus (Nero) was the son of Agrippina the younger, 4th wife of Claudius Nero Germanicus, who had adopted him just before his death (which is considered the result of a manoeuvre by Agrippina and Seneca, Nero's tutor) most probably to ensure his succession.
After the start of Nero's rule, Agrippina became more favorable towards Britannicus, legitimate son of Claudius, but Britannicus was soon killed (AD 55 - it is suspected that Sextus Afranius Burrus[?], praefectus preatorianus and good friend of Seneca, was somehow involved in this murder), and Agrippina's power declined.
