Topic: Ahimelech

In the News (Sun 27 May 12)

  In the Days of Abiathar
David then told Ahimelech that he was on a secret mission for the king with orders not to "let anyone know anything about the business," and so he had his men hiding in "such and such a place" (v:2).
Ahimelech told him that there was no "common bread" but only the "holy bread." Before he would give it to David, he wanted to know "if the young men [whom David had said were hiding in such and such a place] have at least kept themselves from women" (v:4).
Abiathar was Ahimelech's son, who succeeded to the high priesthood when Saul ordered the extermination of all the priests at Nob for the help that Ahimelech had given David.

Matthew Henry's Commentary on the Whole Bible [First Samuel, Chapter XXI].
Ahimelech the priest is surprised to see him in so poor an equipage; having heard that he had fallen into disgrace at court, he looked shy upon him, as most are apt to do upon their friends when the world frowns upon them.
He told Ahimelech a gross untruth, that Saul had ordered him business to despatch, that his attendants were dismissed to such a place, and that he was charged to observe secresy and therefore durst not communicate it, no, not to the priest himself.
Ahimelech thinks that the young men that attended David might not eat of this bread unless they had for some time abstained from women, even from their own wives; this was required at the giving of the law (Exod.

From this we can be certain beyond reasonable doubt, that Ahimelech the son of Ahitub, and his son Abiathar, would have been the high priestly family of the day.
It was "Ahimelech and his father's house" who were required to present themselves to Saul.
Ahimelech might have become aged, and too frail for some of the more physically and mentally demanding duties of the High priest.

Sermon 40 - Jeremiah's ancestry in the reign of Saul and David.
He came from a long line of rural priests, who embraced all the trappings associated with the ancient country shrines, yet who, withal, remained firm as a rock in their faith and worship of Jehovah.
These priests could look back to their ancestor, Ahimelech who, in the reign of King Saul, befriended David, as the young fugitive from the unhappy monarch sought food and shelter at the little temple of the Israelite village of Nob.
Ahimelech, the high priest there, gave David and his men the old bread off the altar, when the new provision of bread was offered in prayer to God.

In this capacity, later, he shared with David and Zadok in the apportionment of the priests into 24 ancestral classes, 16 of the house of Eleazar, and 8 of the house of Ithamar (1 Ch 24).
Many regard "Ahimelech the son of Abiathar" (Mt gives Ahimelech) as an inadvertent transposition for "Abiathar the son of Ahimelech." This is rather plausible in the passage in 2 Sam 8 and the duplicate of it in 1 Ch 18:16, but it has no application in the detailed account in 1 Ch 24.
One must accept Ahimelech the son of Abiathar as historical unless, indeed, one regards the testimony of Ch to a fact as evidence in disproof of that fact.

 What Men with David?
I have emphasized the name Ahimelech in bold print to direct attention to the obvious fact that the priest who gave David assistance on this occasion was Ahimelech and not Abiathar, whom Mark claimed Jesus had said was the high priest at the time of this incident.
Ahimelech, being a priest, wanted assurances that these men, whom David pretended were in hiding, were pure enough to eat the sacred showbread, and so he asked David if they had been with any women recently.
Furthermore, David also asked Ahimelech to give him a sword or spear (v:8), and Ahimelech gave him the sword of the giant Goliath, which was taken to the tabernacle after David had killed Goliath with a stone hurled from a sling (vs:8-9).

Instead, Ahimelech stands up to Saul, speaking on David’s behalf, and reminding the king that David is not only his most faithful servant but the man whom the people honor, and whom Saul has promoted to positions of power and authority.
Ahimelech did assist David, by inquiring of the Lord for him, by giving him some of the sacred bread, and by giving him the sword of Goliath.
Ahimelech is a prototype of all those who suffer and die for associating with Jesus Christ, as he died for his association with David.

Neither Ahimelech nor Abiathar are ever given the title in the OT, though it is clear that Abiathar served as a leading priest (along with Zadok) and Ahimelech may have ranked highly as well.
If Ahimelech was not in charge he would have likely asked his superior to deal with the serious situation.
He had to have known that if he just mentioned "The King" Ahimelech would've concluded that he was referring to Saul the same way that his referral to "The King" to Jonathan would make Jonathan conclude David was referring to Saul in the previous chapter in 1st Samuel.

In this case, he has speculated that Jesus referred to Abiathar rather than Ahimelech, because Abiathar was a "stickler for the law" and a "renowned priest whose name invoke[d] honoring the law," but he did this without offering any kind of textual evidence to support the claim.
Ahimelech, it is said, "was a person of high integrity, who was willing to reprimand a king who he thought was wrong" (though the context is that of responding to an accusation by Saul against him, to which we would expect such a response!)
