Topic: Ahmad (rapper)

Ahmad (rapper) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ahmad Ali Lewis (born in 1976 in Los Angeles, California), is a West Coast hip hop performer.
Credited simply as Ahmad, he is best known for his solitary hit single, 1994's "Back in the Day", a nostalgic song that has become somewhat of a clichéd signifier for nostalgia in hip-hop culture.
Released when Ahmad was only 18, "Back in the Day" hit #26 on the US pop charts and #19 on the U.S. RandB charts on the strength of its catchy hook - a sample of the Teddy Pendergrass' "Love TKO" - and Ahmad's quirky vocal style, reminiscent of Fatlip of fellow West Coasters Pharcyde.

Ahmad - Biography - AOL Music
Los Angeles rapper Ahmad Ali Lewis was only 18 when he burst onto the scene in 1994 with the laid-back groove of "Back in the Day," based around a sample of the Staple Singers' "Let's Do It Again" and produced by Berry Gordy's son Kendal.
Ahmad rode "Back in the Day"'s sunlit vibe to the top of the charts, and saw Giant release his self-titled debut in May of 1994.
Unfortunately, Ahmad learned of hip-hop's fleeting celebrity the hard way, and soon dropped off the radar, relegating the one-hit wonder of "Back in the Day" to mix-tape gem status forevermore.

Robert Christgau: Methods of Escape: Ahmad and Warren G.
Ahmad's long, excitable, word-stuffed phrases bespeak a kid who always colored outside the lines--they're about desire rather than control, so eager to get over you hate to think what will become of him if they don't.
In case you were wondering, Ahmad doesn't claim he robbed that minimart himself.
If Ahmad defines himself as just another niggaroe, Warren G likes to call himself the G-Child, spiritual heir to George Clinton's StarChild, and though the "child" probably just exploits his kid-brother relationship to Dre, the association is eerie.

Ahmad :: Ahmad :: Giant Records
While his young, clear voice was suited perfectly for mimicking Ahmad the kid "taggin' along, naggin'," it was hard to imagine this rapper addressing other topics in a similarly convincing manner.
If any comparisons are in order, Ahmad could be seen as a combination of Slick Rick, Young MC and The Fresh Prince, with all of whom he shares a knack for telling stories and rocking parties.
Ahmad promoted himself as the "West Coast kid with the new sound." And in case it wasn't really all that new, Ahmad and Kendal still made sure it was banging.

The duo's The Mood: Soundsational is sort of a combination plate-there are tracks where Bobby Ross sings, tracks that contain guest singers and/or rappers, and a couple of instrumental cuts/interludes as well.
"It's Over Now" is another trunk-rattler, featuring forgotten mid-90's rapper Ahmad AKA "Back in the day when I was young/I'm not a kid anymore..." Boasting much-improved rhyme skills, Ahmad takes it back in the day again, making an intelligent plea for the skills that made the glory days of hip-hop so special.
The instrumental interludes are OK, particularly the ones that sort of pad the beginning of the album-as they mix a jazzy, mellow musical bae with some frenetic turntable scratching and vocal samples that bound in and out of the mix.

Mad Blunted Jazz - DJ Cam - Music Reviews
Electronica producers like the Orb had been mining the ideas of minimalist and house producers for years, and DJ Cam's fusion of jazz and hip-hop was creative and artistically successful in much the same way -- instead of Tangerine Dream or Steve Reich, substitute Ahmad Jamal or Bobby Hutcherson...
Cam's vision of the late-night creep encompassed lots of oddly tuneful piano or vibes samples and the type of simple East Coast beats favored by DJ Premier and the like.
Most of these are little more than background hip-hop tracks that the average rapper wouldn't even consider rhyming over, but in the grand tradition of ambient music (from Satie to Eno), DJ Cam's productions ranked near the top.

This self-titled disc by Northern California's Plate Fork Knife Spoon is the opposite of the albums that have a jazz influence but are more hip-hop than jazz; this release is essentially the work of a jazz-funk instrumental combo that happens to like the rhythms of hip-hop.
The CD detours into alternative rap territory (à la Pete Miser, A Tribe Called Quest, Common or Digable Planets) on "Wonder," which features rapper Raashan Ahmad.
The grooves are generally infectious -- certainly infectious enough to make this CD enjoyable -- although the solos, as a rule, aren't as focused as they could be.
