AFC chief tones down World Cup boycott threat Asian Economic News - Find Articles
Malaysia's Sultan Ahmad Shah, president of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), seems to have had a change of heart about boycotting the soccer's 2002 World Cup in a row over the region's allocation of places in the finals, the New Straits Times reported Monday.
The walkout was led by Sultan Ahmad Shah himself who explained it as an "expression of Asian solidarity." The entire Asian delegation walked out of the FIFA congress on July 9 in protest over the allocation of four berths in the finals of soccer's premier event in 2002.
On Saturday, Sultan Ahmad Shah was reported as saying that the AFC will not adopt a "policy of confrontation" with FIFA in their bid for an extra berth.
