israelinsider: politics: MK Ahmad Tibi to appeal disqualification from Knesset race   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-18)
MK Ahmad Tibi (Ta'al) said he would appeal the Central Election Committee's decision on Monday to bar him from running for the Knesset in the upcoming general elections.
The request to disqualify Tibi was presented by MK Michael Eitan (Likud) who said, "The central issue that was raised was not over political viewpoints, nor public expressions, rather explicit support for the armed struggle of terrorist organizations, and I brought forth numerous examples of this."
Justice Minister Meir Sheetrit said the decision to disqualify Tibi on the grounds that he supports terrorism was a "mistake." In cases like those of Tibi and Marzel, the CEC should have deferred to the legal positions of Cheshin and Rubinstein, Sheetrit told Israel Radio.

Tibi reportedly described the Palestinian resistance to the Israeli army's capture of Jenin refugee camp in April as "an act of noble heroism." He denied calling the IDF's actions there a "massacre," but told Army Radio that "war crimes" were committed in the camp.

Following its vote earlier in the week to prevent Ahmad Tibi from contesting the polls, the decision by Israel’s Central Elections Committee (CEC) to extend the ban to the outspoken legislator Azmi Bishara and his party, the National Democratic Association (NDA) or Balad, comes as no surprise.
The disqualification of Tibi and Bishara by the CEC, which represents a cross-section of Israeli political parties, “has clarified to the world that Israel’s professed democracy is nothing more than a limited share holding company whose stock is held by Israeli Jews,” the East Jerusalem daily writes.
The disqualification of Tibi and Bishara by the CEC, and Attorney-General Elyakim Rubinstein, “has uncovered the despicable racist face of the Jewish state, and exposed the fraudulence of Israeli democracy,” it says in its main editorial.
