Ahmedabad became the capital of the new state of Gujarat after the bifurcation of the State of Bombay on 1 May 1960.
Ahmedabad is home to a large population of Vanias (i.e., traders), belonging to the Vaishnava and Jain sects of Hinduism.
Ahmedabad has a second cricket stadium at the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation's Sports Club of Gujarat, which as the home ground of the Gujarat cricket team, is the venue for domestic tournaments such as the Ranji Trophy, the Duleep Trophy and many inter-school and collegiate tournaments.

No international airlines, barring the Singapore Airlines, is likely to start flights from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad this year as the civil aviation minister Praful Patel put the airport upgradation plan on hold.
